Street Tag iPhone app: Graff up London scot-free

As part of its Street Summer season of programming and events, Channel 4 has created an iPhone app called Street Tag that allows users to virtually graff any wall or surface they fancy using their iPhones...

Essentially, the app is an augmented reality toy which turns your phone into a can of virtual spray paint. "Using the phones camera mode, it lets you graffiti the streets in real time," explains Alice Tonge of 4Creative who worked on the app. "You can adorn everything and anything, even those buildings you never thought possible, and not get arrested for it. Plus you can geo-tag it so others can see your work."

We've had a go with the app and its ability to recognise walls - and let the virtual paint sit flat on them - is really impressive. It's a shame our graff skills are far too lame to be able to share with you.
The app is free and available via iTunes

There's also a very nicely crafted TV spot (written by 4Creative) for Channel 4's Street Summer season which features graff artist Artful Dodger, cyclist Danny Mackaskill, and a host of musicians and MCs including Professor Green, Ms Dynamite, Faith SFX and more...

Is encouraging people to tag their surroundings, even virtually, a good idea?

Yes it is Polski

Street art might have a place in culture but tagging is the visual equivalent of a dog pissing on a tree to mark territory it's ugly and designed to intimidate and therefore should not be encouraged!

I have just downloaded it, love the idea, although it requires precision aligning unless I'm doing it wrong? I can't make a coherent design?! Anyone else having the same problem.

When is the 'Loot London' app coming out?

With some augmented reality and location-based viewing this could be a lot of fun. I could walk around town and 'see' other peoples tags that they have left.

I don't believe the Street Summer video gives an accurate portrayal of London,
for one thing; it's not on fire!

Waiting for the Android app. This could be fun! I like the old school Krylon logo reference.

It's pretty cool but the AME72 iTAG GRAFFITI app is the best...

Agree with Polski. Given London is on fire this now seems to me horribly tacky and mean spirited.

Its ace!

the real question is not about the right or wrong of virtual tags, but about the right or wrong of expanding 'virtualisation' of every aspect of life.
besides this and its technological aspect - I consider it a waste of creative energy.
