A parting gift to Barcelona

When it came time for Lucas Jatobá to leave Barcelona for a new life in Australia, he decided to say thank you to the city and its people that he had enjoyed so much

Jatobá says " I´m Brazilian and I have  been really happy living in Barcelona in the last three years so I wanted to say goodbye in a special and different way. So I made a video with a message that could be shared with everyone."

There's a back story to this: Jatobá originally made the video with just seven tickets but he had used a song that he didn't have rights to and so had to take it down after only three days online. "Some days later a Spanish website (Atrapalo.com) contacted me and offerred me a donation of 250 tickets to the theatre. Of course I took it and made the video again, in January, one week before moving to Sydney, Australia. Searching for a new song I found this Canadian singer called Jessica Allossery and she gave me the rights of her beautiful song Change the World."

Yes, it all feels a bit like a mobile phone ad, but sweet gesture, no? Oh, alright then...

While the sentiment of giving should never be understated, the method employed here is unfortunately badly chosen, and hackneyed to boot.

Yes, it looks sickly sweet when you see lots of balloons floating around in bright shinny colours for a video with cutesy music; but what happens to balloons that don't get caught?

The foil balloons, often referred to as mylar, are a bladder made of nylon that's covered with a layer of aluminium that is 0.0015 of an inch thick.

That's not biodegradable.

And it's pretty obvious that the materials used are going to be very interesting to animals and birds, who will try to eat them, and suffer as a result.

'Sweet gesture'
No

Stupid?
Yes

For anyone planning to do something as brainless as this, you could refer to the NABAS website for information on releasing ballons, or simply find a better idea...you'll be doing nature a big favour.

Since when has a beautiful piece of work, such as this, had to adhere to strict bio-degradable and animal welfare guidelines? Why limit artists to such rules and regulations?

A stunning piece of work.

Is this really that good? I didn't find it very exciting / interesting.
- also environmentally speaking, i think their are more things to worry about than an artist throwing a few balloons in the air.

well said Curator,

Far better if he had just had a w**k on the rooftop, much more considerate to us and the environment as long as he was out of sight of anyone.

totally and utterly vomit inducing!

On the contrary: Artists should be the most conscious people.

Marcel Garbi

I agree, and that's precisely why he should have decided it's a dreadful idea.

I remember during my early youth in Manchester, finding a balloon with a prize tag on it, fantastic idea. :)

Forget all the environment rubbish. Let's talk about the originality and creativity behind the gesture. I agree about the gifts not reaching specific people but present is aimed at the people of Barcelona as a collective bunch rather than individuals.
