Iran threatens 2012 boycott over logo

According to an article on the Guardian website, Iran has threatened to boycott the London Olympics because, it claims, the logo spells out the word 'Zion'
There may be a number of reasons to take issue with Wolff Olins' 2012 logo but, up until now, that it represents evidence of an international Zioinist conspiracy has not been one of them.
However, a Guardian story says that the Iranian government has made a formal complaint to the International Olympic Committee calling for the logo to be replaced and its designers "confronted" (whatever that means), warning that Iranian athletes might otherwise be ordered to stay away from the London Games.
An IOC official confirmed to the newspaper that the Iranian letter had been received but said: "The London 2012 logo represents the figure 2012, nothing else."

'Zion' spells out Zion too. ZION ZION ZIONNY ZION.
Saying or reading the word has absoluziontely no bearing on anything whatzionsoever. Besides which, it clearly doesn't say 'zion' anyway. Some people will see conspiracies everyzionwhere.
Stop being so bloodziony stupid.

That's funny bacause if you look at it another way:
the 2 looks like an 'I',
the 1 (with the diamond shape from the 2) looks like an 'R'
The 0 looks like a lower case 'A'
and the 2 looks like an 'N'
I.R.A.N
You'd think they'd be pleased!

I heard they were boycotting because they're athletic teams sucked.
2011-02-28 16:10:53
its a horrible logo - but thats crazy...wish there'd been boycotting for it just being plain bad design...
2011-02-28 16:12:32
I guess they will need another £400,000 to redesign a new logo!

Can't wait to see what they do when we hit the year 80085.

I know no one else likes it but I do.
And isn't it great to know that Boggle is a popular pastime in Iran ?

I cant see what the fuss is about. Like anyone would miss Iran from a sports event....
...how incredibly touchy. What if it DOES say Zion? The word symbolises both the moment that spirituality enters reality, or a place on Mount Zion where a fortress once was. I get the connotations, but REALLY.
All this does for me is shows me how backward the state powers in Iran are. Playground tactics....''Miiiiiiiiiiiiiss, Phillip called me fat'' its no different..........

What a lot of hot air... but you have to applause their creativity in finding an excuse not to take part.

Smacks of cynical viral crap – let's invent an issue and get some limelight. Whoops, did I suggest it was a PR exercise? Stupid me...

That's so ridiculous that I just can't believe it. I know Iran decided to sever all ties with Britain back in Dec 2010 so maybe thats why they are boycotting the games. Is there actually any credible evidence for this? Afterall, they are not known for being shy about their opinions.

This doesnt make sense, the only thing this logo represents is a mess! its just the most expensive scribble!

The logo is creative and colorful. Good design may only be in the eye of the beholder. Interesting that the powers that be in Iran are concerned about things other than oppressing their people and creating nuclear weapons - oops, energy.

Nice erudite comment Tony - I concur - So what ...
2011-03-07 08:27:34
I say let them pull out. The fact they've made this statement 3 years since the logo's inception is indicative of how much of a backward culture they lead anyway. I'm sorry but it's true.
