When you really need a coffee...

We've posted before about the work of US illustrator Karen Caldicott, who specialises in clay modelling. Here's her new McDonald's campaign, with some background images on the process

The campaign is by DDB Vienna for McCafé and centres around the idea of how you might feel if you don't get your morning coffee (although the builder above looks like he might be a regular consumer of some of McDonalds' other offerings...)

Caldicott worked from this initial sketch

For the harassed mother with two kids, she worked through various ideas

before coming up with this final ad

Likewise with the discombobulated businessman

Nice work! Thanks for sharing. I like the mother the most.

I see someone used a hot ciggy but on this blimp instead of the Channel 4 inflatable.
Still, same effect.

Weird - and kinda creepy.

Doesn't sell me the product; and the builder one - wow, totally agree. Makes it look like McDonalds is for lazy lardos; which as it happens is true!

I'm I'm lovin' it" but I'm surprised McDonalds feel the same. It looks like an ANTI McDonalds campaign to me. The builder has obviously overdone it on the 'Supersize Me' diet and the harassed mum looks like suicidal. If you click though you can see Karen has the capacity for quite a lot of CHARM (See the Politicians she's done.) (I AM a harassed mum of 2 when I'm not designing and I'm not sure I'm feeling the empathy here.)

The woman with children looks like she has the intestine all around her body, creepy!

Love the general idea and Karen Caldicott's detailed sculptures, but I'm rather surprised the art director didn't guide the process along to bring the clay characters "in on the joke" with us. How much clearer and more positive the message might have been if the builder, mom, and businessman had facial expressions of comical surprise or a startled understanding of their plight...

Great concept and the use of different elements brings the audience attention quickly.

I am a little afraid of this . . . afraid that people have so much imagination and talent.

I like seeing the rough sketches, the essence of the idea is good enough to support the brilliant finish.
