Old school pixel vibes: new Bing campaign + a promo for Mums Of Death

Completely coincidentally, two very different new projects which use visuals that hark back to early computer game graphics have launched this week: a new campaign for Microsoft search engine, Bing, which stars Facejacker character Brian Badonde, an idiotic art critic character loosely based on real life art critic Brian Sewell. The other is a music video for Mums of Death track, Golden Axe...
First up is the new campaign for Bing, called The Art of Technology with Brian Badonde. The campaign, created by JWT Entertainment and Hat Trick Productions, comprises short films of around five minutes, in which the bumbling Badonde character attempts to get to grips with technology.
This first episode sees him visit London's Science Museum to investigate the world's first search engine. The idea is simple: Badonde clearly doesn't know anything about the internet – and his failings to explain or work the tech he encounters makes Bing look like the most intuitive, cleverest thing ever devised. The films are very silly (and possibly slightly too long) and the titles and graphics for the campaign utilise some clunky pixelated graphics, presumably to remind viewers how far home computing technology has advanced...
You can watch episode two and keep up with the campaign at its dedicated website: video.uk.msn.com/browse/brianbadonde
The next project, the music video for Mums of Death track Golden Axe, directed by Scattle utilises the video game graphics aesthetic throughout – as the axe-weilding star of a computer game from yesteryear finds his way into a new level that is basically a nightclub complete with DJs, and a packed dancefloor. Our hero is new to the world of clubbing, which he demonstrates by getting high and having a dance before slipping back into axe-killing mode and slaying the two DJ (the two members of Mums of Death). After a short spell on the decks, our hero has to do battle with the ghosts of Mumdance who form a kind of boss character. But who will win this epic battle? Find out...
Mums of Death is actually a collaboration between Mumdance and Drums of Death. The Golden Axe EP is out now on Greco-Roman

Was a big fan of the Junior Senior video when it first came out, and more recently Flairs - Truckers delight. Both work a look: http://vimeo.com/7670880 I enjoy seeing how the limitations are embraced, a full feature pixel film would be amazing.

This low-tech tendency is, at least, 4 years old.
It may be a revival...
Anyway, the Bing thing is hilarious, but it doesn't make me use it.
Search engines simply need to work better than the others to be used. There's no need for advertising. Just have a look at Google's history... Bing isn't better, it's average...

Love the music video. The Bing stuff is way too long.
