Samuel Hawkins' A-Z of Illustration

Complete with 26 wry observations, Samuel Hawkins' A-Z of Illustration print covers everything from the application of animal heads in one's work, to making 'zines...

Hawkins kindly sent one of his huge prints into CR (see below, pinned down with a couple of notebooks) and what a riot of seasoned advice it is.

When you're stuck for an angle, suggests Hawkins, animal heads come in handy:

And what about the sacred bond between the illustrator and the graphic designer?

As an illustrator, your website can be an effective promotional tool:

If in doubt, there's always the 'sex sells' approach:

So you've no ideas whatsoever? OK, last resort, nick them:

Or...

Hey Sam, fancy making a 'zine? Oh, OK.

You can see the full array of A-Z on Hawkins' website, samuelhawkins.co.uk.

This will definitely strike a raw nerve with a lot of illustrators.
I find that a lot of illustrators crowd out their websites with blogs, twitter, facebook, vimeo and youtube links.
I don't want to see this stuff - I just want to see examples of your work, so that I can commission you.

I love this! Especially the graphic design one, triangles etc - I work as a graphic designer by day and illustrator by night - so definitely amusing to see the stereotypes. Graphic designers think all that illustrators do is drink tea and illustrators think all that graphic designers do is draw perfect trapezoids.

B - interesting. My website is a mix of my portfolio & blog - portfolio at the forefront, blog underneath; mainly because I have interests outside of just illustration, it draws visitors in (SEO I suppose) and it keeps my website active and updated; not just static. Good to know some people just want simple images on a page though, I suppose...

"Can't be bothered to think? Try kids [sic] illustration"

Samuel needs to check out work by people like Shaun Tan, Dave McKean, Oliver Jeffers, (and going back a bit) Maurice Sendak and Quentin Blake (among many others) before he starts writing off children's illustration.

What a bloody stupid thing to say.

It is a stupid thing to say, but the whole project is abit stupid its more observations of people in my year, not some of the great illustrators such as Blake and McKean who i admire and are a great inspiration to me.

Im sorry you didnt find it abit funny but im sure if you had a look at some children's books at degree shows you might find it abit funnier.
