Barbican's Blaze identity by Red

Red Design has just launched a new visual identity for Blaze, the Barbican's summer festival of music and dance...

The Barbican's Blaze festival is "a celebration of the boldest music from across the globe" and includes commissions and new works, open-air concerts, and special shows in venues across east London.

The process of photographing sets and models has enjoyed something of a resurgence of late, and in their take on the technique Red has nicely referenced the architecture of the Barbican towers in coloured paper.

"We want people to feel they could be pulled into this little world rather than just observing a flat image," they explain. "One of our main challenges was to ensure the visuals targeted a wide audience; some of our initial attempts felt too young and naive and not necessarily suitable for the festivals adult attendees.

"We also had to convey that Blaze is a music festival; the addition of the stage and a few graphic elements such the music notes help to make this clear." Red were also behind the design of last year's Blaze identity, which can be seen, here.

Here's a closer look at the 3D set in the Red studio:

And the finished identity, as used on the cover of the Blaze festival brochure:

The studio set up looks really good, although it seems to lack some depth and fluidity in the final execution. Also a pity about the lack of apostrophes on the brochure cover example.

Where are the eco-designers in this shot?

A resurgence of late ? haven't we seen this a million times over, with far better execution and for that last, what, 7/8 years is that of late yawwwn. Must have friends at CR

We always pay a visit to Barbican when we are in London, and we always like their visuals all over London, we like this project, and we like also the work in progress they shown. Thanks! May creativity be always with us!

Sweet idea, think it works but it could've worked without the musical notes, which are a bit cheesy, the other imagery tells the story without them.

This has been done so many times before and so much better. You always have to wonder where a studio gets their "inspiration" from when they do such a style u-turn like this.

It's pleasant. However I agree with everybody else...not very inspiring or original.

I agree with Han, they better get that apostrophe in quick or I will NOT be going.

Good work to Al and the team I say. I think it's a nice take on this technique. I have no nitpicking comments to add - how boring of me!

I think the new campaign is really nice and it is striking and summery and good colours, the models are well made...in short there is nothing wrong with it. It looks to be a progression from what they did before which is good (or bad).

They only thing I would say, apostrophe aside, is that I think the model working in progress shots look better because to me it seems more 3D, the final poster looks a bit flat, like it could have been collaged.

But as I said before, I do think that it is still a nice bit of work.

'nice' says it all - a flaccid nothing of a word...

afraid I agree generally with the naysayers - this is OK, it's palatable but is it what we expect from the Barbican? not really. I think designers and illustrators have been creating work like this for a long time and of much better quality. There isn't anything about this that makes you feel they have thought differently they have just regurgitated others ideas and methods. If this was for a lesser organisation or event i'd probably not give it a second look but as it is for the Barbican I'm surprised it's so average and a little dull. Barbican 'Do Something different' - unless it is design then copy everyone else
