Cravendale presents Cats With Thumbs

Wieden + Kennedy London has tapped into our love of a quirky cat film for its latest ad for Cravendale, which is the first spot for the milk brand since it dropped its Cow, Pirate, and Cyclist characters.

The ad, which is directed by Ulf Johansson and features post from MPC, imagines a world where cats have evolved to have opposable thumbs. Judging by the film below that's been doing the rounds lately, that day may not be long off.

Agency: Wieden + Kennedy London
Creative directors: Sam Heath & Chris Groom
Creatives: Hollie Sayers & Freddie Powell
Director: Ulf Johansson
Production company: Smith and Jones Films

It's not doing it for me. Even if I wasn't such a fan of the previous effort there's something a bit "not very good" about CGI manipulated cats (also roller blading babies etc).

Though I did like the finger clicking bits, I thought it was going to turn into West Side Story.

Nice idea though.

These cats do exist, just search for them. Particularly in North america.

I love Jimmy! 1.5 million views in a week. Thumbs up because she asked, thumbs down no it's not time to get up. Not big on the CGI for the Cravendale ad. It's still fun. R.I.P Cow, Pirate and Cyclist :( long live Jimmy the aces kitty.

I love the Idea of cats with thumbs, can you imagine the trouble tigers with thumbs would cause?

Doesn't do it for me either, certainly not as good as the previous campaign.

Meow, thumbs up! I make jewellery and to think that a cat could wear the rings i'm going to make? An absolute ridiculous joy!

Looks like W+K want Mothers IKEA glory...

This is inspired by so many internet memes (and the 'pre-launch' material is getting quite big on YT).

Still, execution is good.

I like it but don't think its nearly as good as the previous campaign.
Doesn't have the same sense of charm, isn't really that funny or witty.

Possibly needs moar pirates...

Surely this is just a rip-off of an early Eddie Izzard stand-up routine about cats not having thumbs. It's on his 'Unrepeatable' DVD if you want some really good cat-based humour as well as some dog-based humour for those who aren't cat people.

I I agree with Req, the West Side Story angle would've taken it to an 11 as opposed to 7.

I can see this being pretty successful, although it's a shame no-one at the agency mentioned that cats are lactose intolerant...

What happened to the Brooke Bond chimps?
No I don't like this stuff.

The Cravendale ad is fabulous, and this comes from someone who doesn't have TV because I can't stand the thing - not least because of the endless advertising dross. Anyone who doesn't think it is funny has obviously never owned a cat. It actually made me feel brand loyalty for a milk I've never even heard of, or seen. If that's not a great ad, I don't know what the hell is.......

I have a cat with thumbs she's called a polydactyl (many toes) - apparently Ernest Hemingway had a whole colony of them. She's available for acting if anyone from the agency is reading this and planning the follow up.

She is a wonderful intuitive rescue cat who also stands on her hind legs and dances - I need to make a film of her and put it on you tube.

Cat's and milk don't go together though as cat's are lactose intolerant but the ad made me laugh.
I did'nt actually understand the previous campaign with the mini plastic people.

I think the ad is amusing, but I agree the CG is dodgy. However, a friend of mine who worked on the Evian babies campaign - which I personally found a bit creepy - said that the reason the CG was also iffy on that ad was because they simply ran out of time. Ironically it is now believed to be one of the main reasons for the huge success. Consequently, maybe W+K intentionally adopted this look?

A very similar thought to Cravendale's 'So good the cows want it back' from 2005, but nicer.

On a side note, I couldn't stand the Evian 'babies on rollerskates' ad until I saw it again after becoming a father… so maybe this is one for cat lovers?

Just to respond to the comments on 'dodgy CGI' - there was actually no CGI used in the making of this ad. Everything was composited from live action plates. Artem built very detailed, matching paws for each of the cats featuring in the commercial which we used for some of the close-up shots. These were carefully tracked and composited into the cats' bodies. The real legs of the cats were removed and we then used stills and numerous action plates of fur to marry the model paws and the real cats together.

I Love it!! I laughed out loud and that doesn't happen (intentionally) at too many adverts. I always remember humorous ads, so for me this works. I was a fan of the previous crazy campaign with the cow and chicken, but I prefer the new ad and would be interested to see the next instalment....!

Did I really just see the the 'creators' of the ad smugly taking full credit for the idea?

IT IS AN EDDIE IZZARD JOKE, that you 'borrowed'.

Credit where its due for a good ad, but I don't see the point in denying its origins, it just makes them look like utter tools.
