Dorothy's logo-inspired art project
Manchester based creative agency, Dorothy, just showed us an ongoing series of paintings it's working on which display corporate logos but with all the type and lettering removed to leave beautiful flat colourful shapes behind.
The self initiated project is entitled You Took My Name and here the designs created so far which are being worked up into acrylic-on-canvas paintings. Can you name all the brands?

Hmm.. Simple and clean work. MasterCard, CocaCola, Kodak, Carl's Junior is all I can think of.

Simple, yet still so recognisable. Amazing. Love it.
Without "Googleing" too much I can say for sure that the 2nd logo is the classic Coca-Cola.
Also I can see the Kodac and Heineken there. Can't recal thel others except for the 1st, something to do with Visa.
Interesting work—reminiscent to some degree of artist Daniel Pflumm’s lightboxes.
Interesting to compare the two different material approaches and the logos they each selected.

really liking this. its amazing how embedded the original designs are in our head - even when broken down to the most simplest form. i wonder how far you can go until it becomes unrecognizable. even if you had just two colours red and white you would think of coca cola (knowing we are talking about brands here).
saying that its probably the only one.... other than maybe Heineken?

Wow, branding is exactly that- these images are branded right into those little sodium and potassium switches popping off in my brain! Branded, hard-wired into my memory- except for the green with the red star....

Yep, these are indeed visuals for a range of paintings we are currently working on. With Creative Review's Top 20 Logo issue hot off the press, now felt like the right time to share some information about the project. We plan to exhibit them later this year.
Just shows the power of branding. It reminds me of another project where all the brands were reduced to circles.
But I do like this one more.
great way to make "people from the streets" to notice the ART behind everyday surrounding visuals!
indeed, you don't need to appreciate symbolism to recognise these elements and i think the project may be more rewarding if you were to dilute the shapes further. Brands aren't going anywhere any time soon, they have been drilled into our heads to the point that all we really need is a few basic shapes and colours.
UK Designer Graham Smith brings us 'Unevolved Brands' - "a progressive study on brand & logo simplification".
This is not art.....it's a "guess the Log game" and a waste of paint.

might as well corporatize art along with everything else. it is a waste of paint and time.
Nice, but not that interesting, as it's already done when I was on the art school (way back in time). Don't reinvent the wheel;) This step for me is just a step closer to the cutting edge of identity and mass communication. But doesn't bring me there at all.
"Logo inspired" means they are not original; and someone else's design. NOT art.
When did using someone's design and calling it your work become acceptable?
Why is this so impressive? Cool idea for maybe a large collage, but I'm with the people who are not giving it a very good grade. How about a Nike logo? At&T? McDonalds, Target, and the list goes on.
What an interesting concept! It also tests the public's general knowledge of the brand. The Coca-Cola one is my favourite.
