A slice of the action from D&AD

New to this year's D&AD Awards will be two physical awards for both In Book and Nominated work: slices of a coveted Yellow Pencil...
The new trophies have been designed by Turner Duckworth and will sit alongside the Yellow, Black and recently unveiled White Pencils. "The slices of pencil are relative in relation to the size and material of the Yellow Pencil award," explains TD's Bruce Duckworth. "They are also exactly the same shape and proportion of the D&AD hexagonal logo. Of course they are made of wood, to be quirky like the Pencil itself."
D&AD President Simon Sankarayya added "For many years we have endeavoured to communicate more effectively the value of winning at any level in the D&AD Awards and the slices will undoubtably help to build awareness of the great level of creativity that it takes to be recognised by our juries."
Following the recent confusion over work that was "shortlisted" for D&AD (work that survived the first round of judging but was not awarded – see our blog post and D&AD's response, here), the new physical awards certainly go some way to further celebrate the achievement of having work in the D&AD Annual and nominated for one of the top Pencils.
The new slices will be launched at the forthcoming D&AD Awards evening, which takes place on June 16 at London's HAC, Artillery Gardens.

So if by some kind of miracle I get in the book, achieve a nomination and end up winning a pencil and then go on to pick up a Gold award, do I go away with 2 pencils and two slices? Lets not even mention the white pencil and the president's award – what about a D&AD pencil box to go with it so I can carry them all home!
Also will the same system apply to the student award scheme?

Should the yellow pencil become a slice of black?

I was holding out for a pencil shaving...

Ridiculous idea
Ridiculous awards
Ridiculous organisation

If you got an in-book in years past, can you get a retroactive slice trophy?

Devalues the pencil. Would an athlete want a slice of a gold medal for being in a 100m final?
Surely the fact that your wok is in a big book, printed on a page for everyone to see, is good enough for in-book? (I'm going to ignore the nomination furore.)
Is ten good ideas equivalent to one brilliant idea?

For fuck sake guys.
Relax.
I think it's quite funny.

No, but they'd certainly want a silver medal for coming second, and a bronze for coming third! I thinks it's good to recognise how hard it is to even get in the book. I want one!

These slices, somethings missing – are they inferring there is no lead in out pencil?

Why are D&AD intent on watering down the importance of the classic pencil? A D&AD pencil has always been, in my eyes, the coveted award of all awards in the design industry. Now there are 5 ways of winning it just seems to devalue the whole thing.
Plus, I have to agree with John about the need for a box (or Tom's suggestion of a pencil case like Michael Johnson's pencil case cover for the 1994 annual). My baby pencil got scratched by my camera on the 5am stumble home from the after party. I've never had such a feeling of utter dread in the pit of my stomach before.

I think its actually a bit of fun, something sadly lacking in awards, and I like the idea too, reminds me of those kids in school who would still be using the most whittled down stump of a pencil ever.
lighten up, it devalues nothing.

its utterly perfect.. Design should relax.. I actually prefer the little stubbies to the award.. and especially love the fact I now get a taste of the 9 inches without going the full length.

@millsustwo: As the actress said to the bishop?!
The slices seem like a continuation of what most folk assume my baby yellow pencil is - a paper weight.

It's a wonderful idea. it's cool but not taking itself too seriously. we all know how difficult it is to get into this book. it's a recognition of that.

It's all the extra trees that have sacrificed their lives I worry about ;)
Still, nice trophies.

Great that they have backdated it for previous years, but why only to the year 2000? [Why?]. Another shining example of irritating and unnecessarily complicated procedures. Just back date it and don't put a time limit on it. Baffled again by the procedures of D&AD.

Hmmm, it's a nice enough idea for 2nd + 3rd, until someone points out the lack of lead in your pencil...

The D&AD logo is and always had been the lead
2011-05-20 16:42:55
Stupid idea. If I enter and do not win, not get nominated or get in the book do I get a rubber?
2011-05-20 17:23:08
Perhaps a pencil sharper or the shavings would have been more fitting (said with a large slice of irony).
I would like to see it backdated prior to 2000, as it's been a while.
Why do people get so serious at the very mention of D&AD?
2011-05-23 06:35:12
Put it this way guys...win enough and you can stack them to create a pencil a metre high...
The telescopic pencil.

Does D&AD now stand for...Dilution, & Abase Desperation?
