Radiant's Champions League Final identity

Richmond-based Radiant has created the visual identity for the 2011 Champions League final, to be staged at Wembley on May 28. The identity will appear across marketing and other collateral for the final

"Our objective was to promote both the Final itself and London as the host city," according to Radiant designer, Matt Malkin. "We wanted something befitting one of the world's biggest sporting events.  Referencing the heraldic lions found on statues, ironwork and patterns across the city, we've created a powerful and distinctive crest for the 2011 Final.  The lions symbolise the two teams fighting to take possession of the trophy."

Radiant is a bit of a specialist when it comes to football events, having created work for FIFA and France's Ligue 1 as well as the identity for the last nine years of the Champions League, including five finals. Here's some of their work for the 2009 final.

Their site also features posters for some previous finals but keen football fans may notice a little wishful thinking in the team badges used in what must be mock-ups

For an identity that's only going to around for a couple of weeks, I think they could have got away with something a bit crazier.

How does this even get a mention on the CR Blog? Its a boring concept, badly executed and will be forgotten the minute Barcelona depart from Stansted with the trophy.

Sorry, no offence. I'm sure it was a quick turnaround etc.

'Haterz' been 'Hatin' on the CRBlog lately.

Funny how it always seems to be identities that get the most criticism.
Do we all just see 'logo' design as something we all think we can do a better job on?

I suspect a lot of negative comments come from students and designers who aren't familiar with guidelines, brand teams and bureaucracy .

For a Wembley final, it's all a little Scottish ...

Is it me or do those lions look like they are giving the universal signal for "Want a pint?"

From America...I think it's refreshing.

Although the lions do look like they want a pint. I was very sad to learn that y'all don't sell alcohol at major sporting events. I saw the Hearts play a while ago in Edinburgh. They security folks took the wine out of my purse too.

I agree with Tom here it is a good design considering the restrictions that are on these events to maintain the brand look; I do however think Moscow 2008 was more successful in its execution and appearance. The blue background, as mentioned above, does give a sense of Hampden rather than Wembley and the white lion rampant was traditionally a Scottish image referring to William Wallace’s family crest. So although a decent design I think they could have reflected on their design choices to give a more English feel to the event.

As a Scottish man I would say however; be happy that it is better than the 2002 branding for Hampden, because that was far from a polished look. As for its relevance in the creative review I feel it is completely relevant as a piece of design for a major sporting event in Europe and the world and is something that should be taken into account especially in the field of Graphic Design as not all projects taken on will allow creative freedom, resulting in a piece that relies on how you adapt to restrictions rather than an award winning design.
