Sci-fi classics in 3D

Books, Graphic Design, Illustration

Posted by Emma Tucker, 31 May 2011, 14:33    Permalink    Comments (62)

We've chosen our winner and added some of our favourite reader suggestions to the bottom of this blogpost. Read on to find out if your suggestion made the cut.

Vintage has republished a series of five science fiction classics, including titles by HP Lovecraft and Jules Verne, and what's more they're in 3D, with specs included in each copy so you can see the illustrated covers in all their glory. (Read on to find out how you can win a complete set.)

To make the covers, creative director Suzanne Dean and the Random House design team worked with four different illustrators. Jim Tierney created illustrations for both Jules Verne covers (shown above), and Sara Ogilvie and Mick Brownfield contributed artwork for The Lost World and Planet of the Apes respectively (shown below).

Vladimir Zimakov created the cover for The Call of Cthulhu, the last book in the series.

If you've got a spare pair of 3D glasses nearby, you can see the effect for yourself on the pictures above.

Competition winner

Thanks to everyone for sending us your favourite images, we were reminded of a few science fiction classics we'd forgotten about. Honourable mention should go to the following submissions:

However there can be only one winner, and the set of books will be going to Chris Anderson, for his submission of John Wyndham's The Outward Urge.

Please email emma.tucker@centaur.co.uk to collect your prize.

Oh without a doubt it's the movie poster for Invaders from Mars
http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2005900288/tt0045917

Was equally terrified and fascinated by this film when I watched it as a kid in the '80's.

The poster is typical B-Movie style show every character in one place :)

Ray Bradbury's Illustrated Man - not necessarily the best design, but I found the image indelible as a kid before tattoo overabundance http://is.gd/Tg92NH

One of my favourite sci-fi images has to be Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace movie poster, with young Anakin Skywalker and the shadow of Darth Vader! As we all know he grows up to become Darth Vader :P

Hi there,

Cool idea, quite inspiring!!

Recently I came across these 2 sci-fi classics with a new cover and I really like both of them.

http://www.penguin.co.uk/static/cs/uk/0/penguin_sets/georgeorwell_shepardfairey.html

They have that retro feel & they would look wicked in a room (the posters)!

:)

Thanks!!!

If I had to pick just one favourite image it'd be this poster for the 1972 film adaptation of the novel Solaris, with unique, bold typography and diagrammatic illustration (with an outer space element), love it.

There are also a lot of great sci-fi Penguin book covers, hard to choose between them.

These 3D book cover designs look fantastic!

The best science fiction image for me has got to be the first edition cover of 'Star Wars: From The Adventures of Luke Skywalker'!

The colours, the style, all of it gives an impression of one of the greatest space fantasy sagas that is rarely seen elsewhere.

Peter Goodfellows image from Jeff Waynes War of the Worlds. This image scared me so much as a child, it's pretty iconic, beautifully imagined and incredibly eerie. Over the centre of the gatefold vinyl it's pretty special!

Going to be totally different and throw a fake sci-fi poster into the mix - a group of these were on Wired a while back. They are not a display of superior design work but more a tongue in cheek look at those posters, and are made to make you chuckle. I do love the typography on this Joker poster.

The very last scene of WaterWorld...i.e. when the credits are at the VERY end. I have never cheered so much for an "image" in a film... there's 135 minutes of my life i'll never get back!

(cant find a link to an image of the credits - never been so glad that Google couldn't find something!)

Timeless sci-fi story for all ages and cultures. I was 7 when I first watched the movie back home in Malaysia. I didn't understand English then but I could understand its message about friendship. This image has been imprinted on my mind since.

Featured fairly recently in a CR Monograph, I love the series of Penguin SF book covers by Franco Grignani.. they're more sf than sf.. unknown, mysterious, neon - as abstract as any future an imagination could create.. if that makes any sense...

The cover to John Wyndham's Outward Urge. Love the the idea of the tiny spacecraft set again the vastness of space. Holds the ambitions of that generation, and is particularly poignant what with the final ever shuttle launch that happened recently. Where has our outward urge gone?

Comics have always had an important link with SF:
http://forbiddenplanet.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/Ezquerra-Cityscape.jpg
Solaris is my own favourite SF movie, which is obviously the next best (joke) SF medium...
http://www.dvdbeaver.com/comparisons/comparisons/s/solaris_tarkovsky/solaristark_uk2.JPG
But for favourite image, I guess it would have to be something (anything) by Syd Mead (who worked on Aliens and Tron), and since Blade Runner is such a fantastic film, and arguably began it's visual life as a comic strip (Moebius' The Long Tomorrow), THIS is my favourite:
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_TOHTDsQ7iR4/TP5-lbdhF3I/AAAAAAAAB9A/c7fwPmB6FO8/s1600/bladerunnercity.jpg
It's also in a 'photo-realistic' style, which is what science fiction has most often tried to accomplish throughout it's history, with Syd being such a significant force in the development of that long before photoshop existed.
