New Barnardo's ad by BBH

Life Story, a new ad for children's charity Barnardo's from BBH London, highlights how people's lives can change, no matter how they've begun, if they are given help and support.
The spot, which is directed by Ringan Ledwidge, opens with a happy and relaxed young man talking about his life. As he discusses his past though, he regresses in age before our eyes and the troubles he has had to overcome are revealed. The ad then ends with the text, 'It doesn't have to end like it began. Join us to fight for a child's future.'

Not getting Creative Review in print too? You're missing out.
In print, Creative Review carries far richer, more in-depth articles than we run here on the blog. This month, for example, we have nine pages on Saul Bass, plus pieces on advertising art buyers, Haddon Sundblom, the illustrator who ensured that Coke will forever be linked with Santa Claus, Postmodernism, Brighton's new football ground and much more. Plus, it's our Photography Annual, which means an additional 85 pages of great images, making our November issue almost 200-pages long, the biggest issue of CR for 5 years.
If you would like to buy this issue and are based in the UK, you can search for your nearest stockist here. Based outside the UK? Simply call +44(0)207 292 3703 to find your nearest stockist. Better yet, subscribe to CR for a year here and save yourself almost 30% on the printed magazine.

I saw this ad the other day and thought it was really good. It really gets the message across without guilting you into the cause.

Very good work, as it affects through reason.
For me, it also resonates beyond Barnardo's immediate cause, and points to the future problems we are likely to witness if we continue to accept the coalition governments ideological attack upon society (higher education, the NHS and health, well-being, etc.).

5 STARS! brilliant idea, well executed.

Very good. Didn't enjoy the ad, but I suppose that's where its power lies. In that respect, it was very good. The cynic in me says the casting/ acting could be a little better, but I'm no creative/ producer/ director so who am I to criticise.
Marcus Leis Allion: Jog on, mate. This isn't a political thing. Do you think any other government would prevent these problems in our society? No. Exactly. It's impossible to do that. Barnardo's have no say in politics (beyond their employees' votes). Their cause, and their only cause, is children.

This advert is really affective, really homes the message across to the audience. Also I think its just about the right length aswell, as some charity/support adverts go on for too long and turn the audience off.
I really think this advert really highlights to everyone the brilliant job they do.

An advert that ieaves a lasting impression on the audience. Well done.

Saw this last night - excellent angle to utilise - conveys a complex message without spoon feeding the viewer. Was a talking point in our house.

I went to a poetry reading by Carol Ann Duffy last night - reminded me of her poem 'Last Post' where we are taken backwards in time - brilliant use of the same idea - very moving

WOW. Powerful eh...
Well done Barnardo's, BBH and Rattling Stick for its first class seamless production.

Really good, power to the AD.

Brilliant concept let down by some bad casting. The bad acting and dialogue improves as the kid gets younger.
2011-11-08 12:43:39
Very Good!

Just outstanding. As an adopted young man that now runs a 22 people growing marketing agency, this strikes a chord.
It is simply brilliant. Great work BBH, just great work.

Johan ten Houten - You are totally wrong where Marcus Leis Allion makes an eloquent point. This is of course ALL about politics. Indeed life is all about politics !, A true socialist government would indeed focus as a priority on these matters. End
ps. Moving and well produced Video

As an ex-foster kid who now works in advertising, I think this ad is amazingly well done. It's accurate. Nothing more, nothing less. And that's all it needs to be. (Even got a bit of a lump in my throat).

powerful stuff and for a great cause - it's advertising that works for good :)

I found the advert really moving. I think people can often forget the history behind young people with anger issues and troubling behaviour (reactions to recent riots were proof of that). Hopefully it will make viewers more aware and understanding of the underlying causes.

So subtle but so powerful. Great Ad, indeed.

As so many others have said, there is little that is more important than this. I had a period of foster care, and I was lucky - I have only positive memories. I have since seen what happens to people when it goes wrong. This sort of work is critically important in raising awareness and keeping these issues at the forefront of current politics. A difficult job done well, in my opinion.

This advert is a very clever advert. The concept works well, and it transitions from one actor to another is done very well to achieve that regressive effect on the character.

I can't swear on here so... FLIPPING excellent. An award winner for sure.

Brilliant!

powerful. The first character change really caught me off-guard, the last clip as he was a 3/4 year old was particularly moving.

The power lies in the fact that this is true to life. No drama. This is simply how it is. We both work in child protection and witness many things we wish we didn't have to. Neither of us could speak after seeing your advert.. it was that powerful. Our hope is that people will see beyond the behaviour of the young person. That is the powerful message you have managed to portray.

What a powerful advert...
More of these stories need to be told, not just seeing the before and after but the journey that is taken. It's adverts like this that help to make viewers more understanding about the plight of these young people.

Really good ad. Does anyone know who the music is by? I think it's from a film?
