Art

If you're in the mood for a new, or indeed first, tattoo then David Shrigley is offering to indelibly ink your body with his art at the Abandon Normal Devices festival...

Shrigley already has quite a following of tattooed fans who have used his visual musings to illustrate various parts of their bodies. There's a rather sweet quality about many of the examples, collected here on Shrigley's website, while some are just, well, clearly quite bizarre additions to be sporting on one's arm/leg/buttock.

Shrigley's tattoo parlour will be open from 11am to 6pm this Saturday October 1 at Utility, 60 Bold Street, Liverpool L1 4EA, with studio Dermagraffiti on hand to commit ink to skin.

Shrigley tatts are available by prior appointment only and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. You can book a session via tattoo@andfestival.org.uk. The event is part of the Abandon Normal Devices (AND) Festival of new cinema, art and digital culture, which in on now in Liverpool until October 2.

I wouldn't get one myself, but I do admire the bravery and irony it takes to get a tattoo of a leg on your leg.

"Hang on – who did that!? Were you in a moving car when you were getting it done or something? It's really bad, I hope you didn't pay for that, honestly mate I would go and get that covered up by Steve Byrne or Liam Sparkes or something, either that or get your money back. Was it for a dare?"

"It's a David Shrigley drawing"

"Oh wow! That's great! Where can I get one?? It's just so, like, ironic?"

These make a change from the usual naff tribal and Chinese inscription tats. I like them.
However, it does amaze me that people will get any old shit tattooed onto their bodies!

As Ozzy Osbourne said 'These days it's more alternative to not have tattoos'.

This is not art. It's not even tattoo.

It's just plain stupid.

Why bother? You can get a free tattoo like that in any jail while being bent over the lower bunk.

I like Shrigley, he just does his thing. And while I personally wouldn't get one of his tats I agree with B, way better than a lot of cliche stuff you see around. Chinese writing, tribal signs etc.

This is very, very, very stupid. To let someone scar you and he can't even draw properly, sheesh. There really is one born every minute, (and here's eight minutes worth...)

Where has all the humour gone from some of these comments? They're just a bit of fun, and Shrigley isn't the only illustrator to make a living out of a drawing style like this.

I just want to shut the other xavier up. see when i see people with my name on forums saying stupid things, i get very scared other people will think its me. this is probably unreasonable and i should probably get over it.

It probably is art. It's DEFINITELY a tatoo, on account of the ink on the skin and such.

I think it's fucking great and i like to think if me and dave shrigley were ever in the military together he could do our regiment tatoos.

Hah!
