Gary Hustwit's new documentary film Urbanized, about the design of cities, premiered last week at the Toronto International Film Festival. Build has designed the identity for the film, the official poster and a set of four limited-edition prints...

Urbanized is the third film in Hustwit's design film trilogy, following the hugely popular Helvetica and Objectified. It will screen in the UK in October: visit the website at urbanizedfilm.com for more details. Build has designed a two-sided poster for the film, shown above. The limited-edition silkscreen prints (below) are A2 in size and printed on super-bright Colorplan stock in a numbered edition of 100. They retail at $125 each (or $400 for all four) and can be ordered via the Urbanized site.

2011? Blimey! Time passes quickly. Perhaps time to move into a new-Build?

Did the person who 'created' this have any formal design training?

There are limits even to Swiss composure in the face of such butchery.

A piece on Build's work on the CR Blog and the abuse comes pouring in. Yawn indeed. If you have criticisms of the work, let's hear them. But concentrate on the work and not the person behind it please.

The film looks really interesting, big fan of Objectified & Helvetica.

@Patrick

Better still Patrick – remove the option to comment on articles. Sites like It's Nice That show that not having them increases the tone (and perceived quality) of the blog. Allowing comments does CR no favours, as the ill-advised opinions start to rub-off on the site's reputation itself.

@ Tom J Hume
I agree, both of those films were a joy to watch, hopefully Urbanized will be as good if not better.

Arguably London could've done with some city design after World War 2, hopefully Gary Hustwitt will touch upon London's design (or lack of) and it plusses and negatives.

Build's posters, while in keeping with his design style, are interesting to look at and contain no visible hint of 'compromise', pure and beautiful.

Big fan of Build, these are lovely — playful, bold, beautifully executed. Looking forward to seeing the film.

@CR any chance of more detail on the project; thought process, development, rejected ideas/concepts? Thinking back a few years to the issue featuring Build which included the process and revisions behind the Design Museum shop identity. It was a really interesting read and great to see how the project developed.

@ Jon

I don't believe that removing comments altogether is the answer nor do I believe that it would improve the site. Allowing people to debate the work featured on this site is a major part of its appeal and we have had a lot of really interesting and valuable discussions in the comments section. But we are looking at ways to raise the tone.

Taking all of the above into consideration...

Symbolism Poster — was excellent, perfectly laid out, perfect spacing.

Urbanized Poster — bit flawed really. Feels very rushed, and the execution is almost child like.

That's honest feedback as I do love some of his earlier work, but this is pretty poor to be honest.

Still think they are really nice posters, just not quite as nice as the symbolism ones. Yes the look is nothing new, but not everything should always follow a trend. Massive fan of their work in general.

Why is this still getting attention. God I'm bored

with creative review, sorry to the writers it's probably

not your fault, can we see something with a but of foresight in the future?

Build. Boring. Forever.

@ Noir
You are allowed to look at other stories on the site too. And I'm not really sure what you mean by a "but [sic] of foresight"?

I’ve said this before on CR, so apologies for repeating myself. The trouble is, so do the commenters. People continue to come on simply to say the equivalent of 'I hate it', without backing up their opinions with any sort of reasoning.

There’s nothing quite as much fun as a really well-argued castigation (Mark Kermode reviewing a Michael Bay movie, for example, or Christopher Hitchens on religion). But little is quite so dull or depressing as thoughtless mud-slinging.

I applaud your tenacity, Patrick, not to mention the diplomatic restraint shown here. Surely the answer, if anyone at CR has time, is to delete comments like ’Boring’, which add absolutely nothing to the debate, and leave only the useful ones.

Yes the aesthetic may be familiar, but the visual thread from Helvetica to Objectified to Urbanized is consistent and as an ongoing collaboration with Gary Hustwit, it works just fine.

With regards to removing the comments feature on the CR blog: what a bad move that would be. Good critical debate is severely lacking (with the exception of the eye magazine website/blog) in other well known blogs. Just what is needed to keep designers in check if good design is to be continued.

Agreed!
Cheers!
