This Exquisite Forest is the latest digital interactive project from director Chris Milk and Google Creative Lab's Aaron Koblin. Described as a 'collaborative drawing project', it launches today as an installation at Tate Modern and also a website, where users can create their own animations in response to films already submitted...

Milk and Koblin have previously collaborated on some of the most interesting music websites of recent times, including Arcade Fire's Wilderness Downtown site, The Johnny Cash Project, and the elaborate 3 Dreams of Black website for Rome. Their new project is based on the Surrealist game, Exquisite Corpse, where drawings are created in collaboration by a number of artists. For This Exquisite Forest, the idea has been animated, with visitors to the website and the Tate installation invited to contribute their own films in response to a series of short animated sequences. To launch the project, seven artists - Miroslaw Balka, Olafur Eliasson, Dryden Goodwin, Raqib Shaw, Julian Opie, Mark Titchner and Bill Woodrow - have been invited to create short animations using a web-based drawing tool developed by Google. Visitors to the site and the Tate can then add to these, to grow 'trees' of films, with each leaf representing a new animated segment.

In time, users to the site will be able to begin their own trees by starting a new sequence, and thus further expand the forest of animations.

This Exquisite Forest is a collaboration between Tate, Google, Milk and Koblin. The site works best using the Google Chrome browser (naturally), and the project was built using a number of Google technologies, including App Engine and Google Cloud Storage.

The physical installation opened at the Tate Modern today, and will be on until the end of the year. Visitors can interact with the films that have already been created and also add their own on site at Tate, and also via the This Exquisite Forest website.
