PORT Food Issue and more nice publications
Our latest pick of nice publications include a new magazine devoted to booze, the latest zine from illustrator Nigel Peake, plus the new Food Issue of PORT magazine...
Here at CR we're big fans of the editorial design skills of Matt Willey who is the creative director of PORT with Kuchar Swara. So when he described the new Food Issue (shown above) as "the best issue of any magazine I've ever been involved in," naturally, we were eager to check it out.
The issue has been guest edited by Fergus Henderson (founder of the St. John restaurants in London) who appears on the cover, shot by Philip Sinden. Inside there is work by a host of photographers and image makers all pulled together by Willey and his team: "We called in every favour we could," he tells us, "from asking Francesco Franchi to create an info graphic about fish to getting Sara Cwynar from New York Times Magazine to do some hand-painted lettering. One of the highlights," Willey continues, "is a set of photographs of fish by Giles Revell, which I think are just amazing."
Other highlights include Nigella Lawson shot by Jeurgen Teller, Domenic Lippa writing about food packaging and Fernando Gutiérrez writing about a wine label. Without further ado, here's a look inside the issue.
Illustrator Nigel Peake's latest self published zine contains drawings of various things from bikes to birds and boats and boxes through to rocky outcropss cars, shells and shirts. It also contains various written observations too, from a list of book titles on one shelf to a recollected cricket score and a list of popular phrases. All quite random. But compelling nonetheless:

Hot Rum Cow is a brand new magazine devoted to the many wondrous joys of booze. "If you're intrigued by the extraordinary evolution of gin or why anybody would want to insert a bottle of strong beer inside a preserved stoat, you will love this magazine," suggests its publisher Fraser Allen in his editorial on the inside front cover. "If you want to hear about bacon-flavoured vodka, prison booze and five-plum wine, or find out why Scotland will be a major wine-producing region by 2080, read on," he continues.
Just as Allen make a good case for perusing the magazine (I must find out more about this bacon-flavoured vodka), so does its design. Here are some spreads:

The Food Issue is lovely, especially the photography!
Port is a lovely magazine, have been getting since its launch and it just gets better each issue. Lovely art direction, and intelligent, interesting articles. An example of how a magazine should be.
I've got the urge to not only gorp at Port online, and go out and sniff and feel it... I have the urge to go and BUY it.
I don't buy magazines.
