French illustrator and artist Laëtitia Devernay has been named as the winner of this year's V&A Illustration Awards for her book, The Conductor

The Conductor (above, published by Chronicle Books) tells the story of an orchestra conductor whose enchanted baton transforms a grove of trees into a flock of birds taking flight. It won Devernay (below) the Best Book Illustration and Overall Winner prizes, together worth £4,000 (each category winner receives £2,000).

The annual V&A Illustration Awards celebrate the best illustration published over the last year. This year's judging panel was made up of fashion designer Orla Kiely, broadcaster and cultural commentator Emma Freud and V&A director of design Moira Gemmill. The latter described The Conductor as "Utterly delightful and engaging".

The Best Book Cover and Jacket Illustration prize went to Matthew Richardson for his cover of The Folio Society edition of Albert Camus's The Outsider.

Best Editorial Illustration was won by Nick Lowndes for an illustration for the FT on Small Businesses

Best Student Illustration was won by Holly Mills for Hothouse

The Student Runner-Up was Daniel Clarke for Heygate Memories

Congratulations to all the winners. A display of artwork and published work by shortlisted artists in all categories will be shown at the V&A until 31 December 2012.

The V&A Illustration Awards is supported by the Enid Linder Foundation.
