We will show you where the goal is
FC Magdeburg aren't having much luck at the moment. Currently bottom of Germany's Regionalliga Nord, they haven't scored in five games. As a last resort their fans gave them some extra, highly visual, support during last Sunday's match against BAK '07...
Before the game Magdeburg fans were seen handing out giant brightly-coloured arrows to fellow supporters. As the match started it became clear that the green, yellow and orange cut-outs would be used, swarm-style, to help indicate to the Magdeburg players where the goal was. A kind of in-game, responsive wayfinding system as they no doubt didn't call it.
According to 101greatgoals.com, a banner was also constructed bearing the humiliating legend "we will show you where the goal is". To a not-particulary packed crowd of 2,793 the fans kept up the moving pointers, getting particularly animated around corners (see link below).
Sadly, the fans' exemplary use of movable supergraphics wasn't quite enough. Magdeburg did score a goal, but went down 2-1. An 89th-minute goal from BAK '07 substitute, Cakmak.

Exactly my thoughts on seeing this Marc. I don’t think we are being cynical, just over saturated with brand communication that is often very clever but with little point or relevance.
Let’s hope this is just a bunch of people who had a bloody funny idea and in the process made supporting their club a little more bearable, completely on their own, it can happen you know.

Take away any cynicism and I have no doubt that a bunch of people (that aren't being paid for it) can come up with a brilliantly funny idea; and that's what makes this great. It's about getting your mates, and fellow fans, on board simply because it's a funny thing to do. And not because you have a fistful of dollars...

@ Ben, @ Marc Thanks very much for the comments on this; it is something we thought about prior to posting it. A few things have since caught my eye: the film of it on the link above was uploaded by sportfotos-md.de, a sports photography website (which appears to cover Magdeburg games). There's a badly translated description of what happened on the Sunday at http://www.sportfotos-md.de/aktuelles/ - the company praises the actions of the arrow-wielding 'ultra' fans known as Block U - they did after all bring thousands of people to their YouTube page and stills gallery. SFMD has since organised an eBay auction of one of the arrows and a signed kit, the proceeds seemingly going to this group of fans. My badly-translated-German is a bit rusty though.
Being bottom of the league and probably having a low morale, I wonder if any of the players found it patronising and therefore counter productive?
Thanks for the reply Mark, I’ve been told it’s apparently quite a big thing at football matches in the Asia, so technically that makes it a little like a Mexican wave - crowd initiated fun. No doubt there will be an advert on our screens based on this very soon (sorry that was cynical).
Hey guys, i am german and do know some of those guys who had the idea. It was definetly an idea the real ULTRA fans had. No agencies involved. Just a couple of guys having fun and trying to support their team in a creative way. The new coach (the old one was fired after the match) was in the stadium and felt a little offended he said. There are other possibilities to motivate the players, but the fans had fun anyway.
Can't see the point
I'm looking forward to the day the football team turns up at the places where these fans work and publicly humiliate them when they're not performing well.
I guess this must be a new way of supporting a football club... however it must be a very distracting way of supporting for the players :)
