Wallpaper*'s handmade custom covers

Wallpaper* magazine has approached almost 30 image makers (including Laurent Fetis and A2's Henrik Kubel, whose covers are shown above) and asked them to create a handmade cover image for its forthcoming August Handmade 2012 issue...

As ever with such a project, different covers will appeal to different people, and some are more successful as magazine front covers than others. Here's a selection of some of our favourite contributions:

Above: Designer Tom Hingston used cut paper to create his cover image

...as did Rob Ryan (above) and Ian Wright (below)

Both James Joyce (above) and Nigel Robinson (below) used paint to create their covers

And both Von (above) and Melvin Galapon (below - a reference to Ian Wright's work, perhaps?) chose the humble pencil as the medium for their very different approaches

Elsewhere, the Wallpaper* asterisk provided the inspiration for both Bibliothèque's cover (above) and for Jonathan Ellery's (below)

Subscribers and non subscribers alike can view all 27 covers on the magazine's website and select which cover they'd like to adorn their August issue. The issue with their cover of choice (if ordered) will then be sent out to them when the issue is published. The magazine is also hoping to host an exhibition of the artwork at some point in July in London.

The full list of image makers invited to create a cover is thus: Alan Kitching, Anthony Burrill, A Practice For Everyday Life, Bilbiotheque, Daisy De Villeneuve, David Carson, Hellovon, Henrik Kubel, Hiroshi Tanabe, Hort, Ian Wright, James Joyce, Jonathan Ellery, Kam, Wallzo & Paul Young (a collaboration), Laurent Fetis, Margaret Calvert, Melvin Galapon, Nigel Robinson, Peter Miles, Quentin Jones, Rob Ryan, Sam Winston, Studio Frith, Supermundane, Tom Hingston, Trevor Jackson, Vince Frost.

Hit and miss, but still a great initiative.

Yes, it’s great work... In my school days, I have made one handmade wallpaper with the use of feathers. It looked very pretty and ancient. I have also got the prize for it. I like to do this type of activities in spare time because it gives me pleasure.

Some fantastic covers,
Tom Hingston paper cut is my favorite due to overlaying of the cut paper.

Some interesting approaches I love Jonathan Ellery's gaffer tape asterix? Quality idea simple and representative of wallpaper
