Ed Ruscha, Richard Prince, Lawrence Weiner and Martin Creed are among the artists who have created text pieces for a series of plane banners to be flown at the launch of Art Basel Miami Beach 2012…

Presented by Morgans Hotel Group and Van Wagner Communications the Plane Text project launches on December 5. Morgans’ Adam Shopkorn selected a group of 15 artists to create word banners – created using the same font and colour – that will be flown to coincide with Miami Beach art festival.
While using a standardised banner typeface puts the work on the same level, it does seem a shame that the project isn’t able to make use of some of the most recognisable fonts in art. Franklin Gothic Extra Condensed is a firm favourite of Lawrence Weiner’s, for example, while Boy Scout Utility Modern is Ed Ruscha’s own font he has used since the 1980s.
Artists whose texts will fly over over selected areas of Miami, once a day for five days, also include John Baldessari, (The Estate of) Sol LeWitt, Jack Pierson, Kay Rosen, Hank Willis Thomas, Alan Ruppersberg, Gary Simmons, Mel Bochner, Alexis Smith, and Jenny Holzer.
Plane Text runs from December 5-9. Each day, three planes will each tow a unique artist’s banner in the sky for a four-hour period. More on Art Basel Miami Beach 2012 at miamibeach.artbasel.com.
