Asked to produce a brand identity guidelines manual for Norwich Cathedral, there was really only one route The Click Design Consultants could take…

The Click created Norwich Cathedral’s brand identity back in 2009. They have carried on working with the client since and were recently asked to create a brand guidelines manual for cathedral staff and suppliers.


The solution was staring them in the face – a ‘brand bible’ created to look like a real bible.


It looks like the consultancy had a huge amount of fun shoehorning as many religious references into the work as possible.


And fair play to the cathedral authorities for going along with what could have seemed a slightly sacrilegious gag.


One slight let down is that the book does not actually exist as a physical object – it was designed to be an online resource only. But in these times of tight budgets and environmental concerns, that makes sense.

    The type setting in the main text is a shame: never heard of justification settings? Ever had a look at a properly typeset bible? The wholes in each line are far worse than on Kindle. And that’s an achievement.

    If I were the client probably wouldn’t find it funny at all.
    However it comes to show how much a “business and marketing” thing a Cathedral has became.

    God Lord. Even my Mum would comment on that justification setting. You could get a bus through those gaps – possibly the worst set type I have ever seen make it to print. I’m actually surprised Norwich Cathedral went for this concept, style over substance comes to mind.

    We shouldn’t idolise the Bible itself, but venerate God’s word contained within. Looks like an effective branding execution. Good work

    I think the type justification is supposed to mimic a bible. It’s obviously set like that for a reason otherwise it would be blasphemy in both the religious and design sense. I like it. And not just because I’m from Norfolk and a Norwich City FC fan.

    Not only is the justification terrible on the right hand page opposite “In the Beginning”, so is the writing. “comprises of” is illiterate; it should be either “comprises” or “consists of”

    Thou shalt not carp on about the use of apostrophes when they are required: “don’ts” is correct, as it’s an abbreviation of “do nots”

    don’ts is absolutely correct, however “do’s” is not – as it is neither a possessive nor a an indication of a missing letter.

    Most branding guideline documents I’ve worked from are depressing and inspiration-draining experiences that totally undermine the original remit of the brand.

    I wouldn’t mind one bit working from a set of guidelines like this!
