Every 20 years, Preston stages a unique celebration of crafts and trades – the Preston Guild. This year's event will include an exhibition marking the work of former students of the leading art and design school based in the city

Once In Every will celebrate the work of the impressive list of alumni to come out of the University of Central Lancashire's School of Art, Design and Performance. Curated by Ben Casey (founder of design studio The Chase and a UCLan professor) the show will include work from the likes of sculptor Andy Goldsworthy, architect Ben Kelly, John Foxx of Ultravox (see our profile here), director Adrian Moat and Pentagram partner John Rushworth.

Once In Every is at the PR1 Gallery, Victoria Building, UCLan, University of Central Lancashire, Adelphi Street, Preston PR1 2HE until September 30. Details here

This show is great- stunning to look at and really interesting background to the work on display, and insight to the exhibitors' approaches to creative practice. I especially like the way that art, fashion, graphics, advertising, interior design etc are all being shown in the same gallery - where the mediums are overlaid and layered in space, and there are films showing and music too. This is such an unusual and special experience. The quality of the content is self-evident and the spatial layout makes it possible to see the connections between disciplines. It makes it possible to really appreciate the flexible, transferable skills of these highly successful creative practitioners. I found it very inspiring and informative.
If you are interested in the evolution of art and design education and/or its continuing role in the development of the creative industries, then I think this show will bring you a valuable opportunity for review and also to consider what will be important approaches for the future. Its good to see such strong evidence of the enduring power of ideas and creative communication. Definately worth a visit.

Apart from its stunning visual appeal, the 'Once in Every' show gives a clear message of hope to young creatives who can clearly see the link here between academia and industry. Alumni have demonstrated the feasibilty of studying design and successfully finding a pathway into the creative industries. The work shown here is full of inspiring examples of achievement on a grand scale across a variety of disciplines within the field of design. This reinforces the idea of the rewards that education and creative expression can bring. The evidence is in this show.
