Win tickets for Typo London

Graphic Design

The Typo conference series, which originated in Berlin, returns to London this year on October 19 and 20, and we have five pairs of tickets to give away.

Recent additions to this year's line-up incude the London-based publisher Visual Editions, Irma Boom, Paula Scher and Rian Hughes, whose fairground photographs were featured in October's Monograph. Other speakers on the schedule include Kate Moross (above), Ken Garland, Anthony Burrill, APFEL and Paul Barnes.

Explaining the topic, head of programme Adrian Shaughnessy says: "What I like about the idea of having ‘social' as our theme is that there are so many ways of being social - both as a designer and as a human being. It is thinking about the social implications of our work as designers. It is sharing professional experiences at an event like Typo London. I also hope people will use the two days to look at what they are doing as practitioners or as students. It is no longer possible to be a designer without considering the social implications of what we do - environmentally, ethically and culturally."

The event runs across October 19 and 20, and tickets are £425 for the two days. Full details can be found here.

Thanks to Typo London we have five pairs of tickets to give away for the weekend. For a chance to win a pair of tickets, simply add a comment to this post letting us know why you in particular deserve the tickets (bonus points awarded for creativity). You have until 5pm GMT tomorrow (Friday September 28), and then we'll choose our favourite responses and announce the five winners.

WINNERS ANNOUNCED

After careful deliberation, we've chosen our five winners, who will each receive a pair of tickets for Typo London.

Our first winner is James E - we couldn't resist his mastery of the fine art of punning:

"Ill get to the point.
To be franklin, times are hard & I avant garde a hope in helvetica of stretching to such an extended price. I'd be the happiest minion in the univers for myriad reasons, and know I have an extra slim chance but I'm set on windings and would treat you to a point and a courier in the futura, bodoni if I win. Apologies if you find the syntax a little grotesque.

Must em dash"

Anzhela and Luca also did a great job on this front, with their type-themed conversation:

"Anzhela: Hey Luca do you think we can DINGBAT those tickets?
Luca: Let's give it a go but there is a MYRIAD of people already trying.
A: Yes but we can write something AVANT-GARDE to get noticed.
L: mmh... probably something ZAPFINO would be more COMIC SANS.
A: OPTIMA! I wish to have one of those tickets in my hands.
L: Oh don't tell me about it, the smell of PAPYRUS can't disappoint.
A: And what about listening to all those LEADING designers? I wish I could socialize and make some LIGATURES with them.
L: I just hope our try is not going to be too much of an AKZIDENZ GROTESK.
A: No don't worry we will try with some EUROSTILE and ITALIC accent!
L: What if we do not get any free tickets?
A: We can TRADE GOTHIC jewellery with Creative Review.
L: No… They are just too MODERN for this.
A: We do not have any TRANSITIONAL option: you just have to steal them !
L: Na… the british SERIF will catch me and send me to the famous OLD STYLE prison.
A: Don't worry, I will bring you a BASKERVILLE full of FRUTIGER during my visits to keep your soul LUCIDA.
L: That's very GARAMOND of you!
A: I am sure your X-HEIGHT will allow you to escape from the BOLD security guy.
L: Anzhela, I think the best way to get those tickets is to write a personal eMail to Patrick Burgoyne !
A: He is not going to listen to the words of an AMERICAN TYPEWRITER ! I am sure he will think is a TRAJAN.
L: We can still try, this talk is just ROCKWELL !! "

We enjoyed Jonny's animated gif response:

"Winning tickets to Typo London would be..."

Maisie won us over with her comment, and also because she did such a great job as a talent-spotter for us earlier this year.

"I deserve them because I can't think of anything else to make a pie chart about!!
-in case you don't know what this is about you can also win tickets by making a pie chart on the typo london website.

(also I'm a poor student, sob! and I did that talent spotting thing for you at the end of last year) "

And last, but definitely not least, we thought Joana from Portugal definitely deserved a pair of tickets:

"I'm a student from Portugal and I'm doing my MA thesis on typography, more specifically, on signage. So going to Typo London would really mean a lot. I would have to pay the trip, somewhere to sleep and food; that adding to the amount of books I've been buying for the thesis research, it's too much right now.

Hope to get that ticket! If not, sadly, I won't be going.

Best regards,
Joana Nogueira."

Thanks to everyone who commented, and well done to our winners - we'll be in touch with details of how to claim your tickets.

I'd love to be able to go to Typo London. I would turn up with a handbag full of black marker pens, using them to correct misplaced and forgotten apostrophes, draw a funny face in the middle of every capital 'O' I find, and carefully fill in for sloppy kerning and punctuation wherever I see fit. I suppose I should probably also make an attempt to network whilst I'm there, if I have time in between amending wayward commas into semicolons.

I am a BA Graphic Design student at Central Saint Martins, anyone who has been a student would know affording tickets to an event like this is near to impossible. Irma Boom is one of my all time favourite book designers, with Anthony Burrill being one of my favourite graphic designers after seeing him work at Pick Me Up! If I was to win a pair they definitely won't go wasted. Creative Review is one of my favourite magazine!

The hottest ticket in town with so many respected designers on the PLAYBILL and I want to be a part of the media CIRCUS that is Typo 2012. It would have a great IMPACT on my design FUTURA and help me stand out in the LIMELIGHT. So please consider me for the tickets to the event of the CENTURY as no doubt it will be STANDING ROOM ONLY. Any delivery method is fine, either post or by COURIER.

I deserve tickets to the Typo conference because of the very implications that Adrian Shaughnessy mentions that we should be considering; "environmentally, ethically and culturally".
Environmentally - as I live in Yorkshire, we have to consider the carbon emissions for me to travel back and forth to London.
Ethically - can the prize to a conference ever be considered more important than the very environment of our planet?
Culturally - as a culture our current understanding of our carbon footprint is increasing and guiding our decisions about house maintenance, shopping, travel etc. Which is a good place to be. So as a culture can we really afford to give the opportunity to win this prize to anyone further away then say the M25?

Errrr… I of course maybe doing myself a disfavour with the above reasoning. So that being the case, please, please, please give me the tickets! Go on, I'll be your best friend! Plleeeeaaassseeeeee!!! I love you! x
Christian

Why I deserve these tickets... Hmm.
Well, I've always had a burning desire to try a "real" plate of fish and chips, Yorkshire pudding and English beer. Outside of that, It might be nice to quietly criticize business logos, signs, and typography choices in a different country for a change.

Cheers.

I don't have a creatively worded reason full of puns or play on words that will make you laugh or think that I'm superbly witty.

I think it would be a great opportunity to gain some first hand knowledge and inspiration from some of the best - and for which this designer is sorely in need of.

I am obviously gonna try and sell myself here...just as will everyone else, so I have been thinking about the best way to do this to ensnare some ticket action. Now I could tell you that I haven't been able to eat anything but beans for a month due to student loans ruining my life, but the truth with that is I have a particularly regular bowel because of it and for that I am grateful. I could also tell you how I spent my birthday wknd in bed crying (22nd/23rd Sept) because the surprise birthday my boyfriend planned, went horribly wrong, but ultimately I have a loving boyfriend who is prepared to do that for me and for that I am also grateful. I could also waffle on about how I have just started my 3rd year at uni and that I am the total newbie at the ripe old age of 26 and it's really hard work where sleep is a myth, but realistically I am surrounded by interesting people doing something I love for which I am REALLY grateful. So really, I'm pretty lucky, I have my health, love and education. I don't deserve the tickets...none of the people on here who comment do...reason being? We WANT them...and bad enough to sell our souls to get them. It is for this very reason that I personally feel socially responsible to attend this event and cleanse my soul of this glorified prostitution (but mainly to be able to take my lovely man to London whilst I am absolutely brassic to cheer him up because his job as a graphic design teacher is royally undervaluing and underappreciating his talent and dedication). I also want to get better at what I do - but it's mainly for him. But I really wanna go. PLEASE?!?

I want to go because I'm pretty anti-social. I'll spend the whole time staring at people but not talking to them, standing too close to groups of attendees whilst breathing heavily and mumbling to myself. If someone tries to talk to me I'll probably spray them in the face with Lynx deodorant then runaway screaming. It will be good for me to get out of the house though.

I might even wear pants.

No promises.

I want to go so I can size up everybody who's talking, so when a question like "Who'd win in an arm wrestle, Adrian Shaughnessy or Eike König" comes up, I'll have a reasonable answer to come back with. I also want to go because I hope that this'll get back to them and put the thought into their heads too, and hopefully they'll be some incredible Over The Top moment during an interval.

Simply, it's too expensive for me to pay to go, I'm a Junior Designer and wonder how people actually have the spare cash to pay for this type of thing, when really it should be more affordable and available, there is some kind of stop gap between discounted tickets for students and Creative Diretors and other Senior Designers who can fork out this kind of cash to go to this kind of thing, when really its us at the beginning of our designer careers could really benefit from the knowledge and experience that is avaiable to be passed on from the likes of Paula Scher and Anthony Burrill. People who I have written essays and dissertations on but am too busy paying off my student fees to be able to have the odd hundred quid and more lying around.
Cheers then!

I deserve tickets to the Typo conference. Because me winning fits in with the theme Adrian Shaughnessy has identified around the conference, social. I'm a northern designer, imagine the social implications of me being in London. The North and South divide will be forever rubbed away as my warm and welcoming persona radiates across the conference. The communication revolution of the internet will be dwarfed by this momentous event. And you Creative Review can be the catalyst for this earth changing spectacle.

I've just started out on my BA Graphic Design course - fully committed but still apprehensive. I feel there is a great crevice between where my work is and where I think it should be. Where I want it to be. The reason I did graphic design is I fully believe in its ability to improve peoples being; even in simple, day to day ways.

My first choice of degree was English - before I found myself expressing ideas visually, I did it through words. The combination of my interest in language and design might make it seem that typography would be a natural skill to have, but I've often found myself disappointed with any type work I produce. I can tell somethings not quite right with it - finding out what is the hard bit.

Anyway, some of my heroes (

I'm currently studying in my third year BA (Hons) Graphic Design degree at Leeds College of Art. Before attending the course, I didn't even know the difference between a serif and a sans serif typeface, now, two years on, type is a huge element of both my design and my work, and would love to develop my knowledge and skills within typographic and editorial design.

To win the tickets would be... beyond amazing, good luck everyone!

Either way, as I enter my last months as a man of (relative) leisure I feel it is my duty to take onboard as much wisdom as possible to impart to my newborn. I deserve them because me and my magic dragon bert, would use the talks to make the world a magical and beautiful place full of jelly beans.

But seriously, I work for a company who find amazing things to do for familys and children to do called Look Bunny Find :) we have loads of buisnesses to use. and we are always looking for the latest design trends in coding and creativity to help improve our apps UX. We also have a tonne of other apps and games that would benfit from this insite, I also plan to take on an apprentice ship Art and Design Course which this would gear me up for nicely and as a coder, designer and grpahic artist this is a rare event that actually talors for both the artisticly and technically creative.
where most people would assume coding as being very technical. What I love about the current world is its possible to be a hard core coder yet you can be coding art or you can be doing art but your designing something very digital / technical. And then both art and technolgy come together oyu make something beautiful and engaging and even social people just love to hold in their hand. It becomes more than just art it becomes a connection between you and your users.

And whilst it isn't a magic dragon called bert, we hope that it will help make the world a better more magical and beautiful place and maybe just maybe it could be full of jelly beans.

So the question is if your life could be one flavor of jelly bean what would it be?

These two tickets would be a two-fold win for me:

1) It's near my birthday so I get to celebrate the grand age of 26 surrounded and feeding my head with the BEST of knowledge: type-knowledge.
2) I owe a swanky type-loving friend a plus-one favour for a mega bash he took me to, that I am struggling to match.

So it'd make not one, but two people's months.

P.S. I also vote [even if it doesn't count] for James E. He's not my aforementioned pal, but his post definitely made me giggle.

TYPO London 2012

I feel attending a Typo Festival is a chance to become more sensitive to type. Not just get to know more trends, but to feel more. Professional typo design is invisible to eye, extremely intelligent and brings pleasure to reader. The only difference between reader and designer is that designer knows and feels how it is to be done. So I want to become one like that. This is my reason to visit Typo London.

Because I cannot afford the ticket price, because winning it would be like winning a holiday and because I tried last year - didn't get it, so I'm trying again this year and every year till I'm lucky!

Graphic Design:

The day was hot and sunny, and my dreams had gone back to normal. When I'd woken up that morning and gone outside, I knew just where I was: no more confusion. When I step out of my door, I have to close it behind me quickly, or sand blows in. My neighbours smile at my still-awkward way of doing this, but there's no menace there, only an abiding good nature. When I see them, my first thought is invariably: "these are good people." As the months wear on, the pile of books on my desk gets bigger, and my hope for the future grows. Some afternoons, sitting by the water, I look at the backs of my hands for a long time, and it is only then that the surface begins to crack a little but, and I allow myself to think about the past.

Comic Sans walks into a bar, and the barman says "We don't serve your type here." :D

Why should i win the tickets? Because it would be amazing to see all the inspirational type out there at the moment...and maybe after, i'll be able to come up with a better typography jokes!

I would love to attend. I could totally liven the place up with a sexy typographic display, the like of which you have never seen before. I would spread my kerning as wide as I could and give you a good peek at my descenders. After looking over my lovely ears, neck, lobes, shoulder's and tail you can stroke my bracket until someone overshoots into the bowl.

I also hope that a attending a formal conference on a subject I love would teach me not to be so crass and to reign in my love of puns and innuendos. help me please!

I'd love a ticket to Typo because, as luck would have it, this conference coincides with my first ever trip to London! And I'm coming the longest way of anyone (all the way from New Zealand - that's long haul dedication) and I can't think of a better way to round out my stay than attending a series talks so tightly kerned full of design goodness. That is all.

I would love to go, because, to quote Erik Spiekermann from the lovely Helvetica documentary, "I'm obviously a typeomaniac, which is an incurable if not mortal disease. I can't explain it. I just love, I just like looking at type. I just get a total kick out of it: they are my friends… I get kicks out of looking at type."

I would like the tickets because I work for a publishers and spend my days typesetting: spreading poor design, badly kerned text, awful font combinations (futura and avant garde – yea that's right), widows, orphans, too bloody narrow columns of text, text so small and so large, that it is utterly illegible, low resolution images, all the colours, all the styles and all the grids (different on each page) throughout the sporting world.

And although the sporting world knows no different, it's not fair on them, and they deserve better. And these tickets, and premise of knowledge they give would make everything better.

There once was a UCF undergrad
Who believed that she would be pretty mad
Not to take the time
To write a small rhyme
And win the best ticket she'd ever had

(and since a limerick has such limited capacity for reasons why I'd love to win tickets for TYPO I shall list some of them below...
1. My birthday is on the 18th and it would be a make a great present
2. The list of speakers is amazing, from the legend Ken Garland to the brilliant Kate Moross
3. I want to know so much more about typography
4. I feel excited just writing about it here...

I deserve to go to Typo because .... A man wakes up one morning and notices he has turned into a giant moth. He leaves the house to get help and proceeds to the bakery. When he gets there he says to the bloke 'look man, I've turned into a moth! I need help!'. The guy goes 'Yeah, you need help but you need to go to the doctors, this is a bakery, why have you come here?' And the bloke goes 'Well, the light was on!
