Airside do Glastonbury – The Movie DVD packaging

Glastonbury - The Movie. Packaging by Airside
Cows, snogging and acid… Airside has created the packaging for Glastonbury The Movie

At a time when you can get online and simply download music and films, really it’s down to the packaging of albums and DVDs to make the tangible music or film product a viable option to the consumer.

With this in mind the creators of the classic 90s film, Glastonbury The Movie – which Mike Leigh notably described as a masterpiece – set about creating a monster of a DVD package so jam-packed with extras and previously unseen or released footage of good ol’ Glastonbury, that the film itself makes up just a fraction of the 36+ hours of content actually contained on the three discs, which come housed in a package devised and designed by Airside.

Being rather big Airside fans here – we were pretty chuffed when one of the DVD packs landed in our post tray this week. The package comprises a sunset orange slipcase (complete with spot varnishes) which contains a double sided poster, a booklet guide to the package and a fold-out pack containing the three discs: the first depicting a serene-looking cow in a field; the second a snogging couple; the third – an audio disc – displays the ubiquitous yellow smiley ‘acid’ face. The discs contains the film, 12 hours of video, 24 hours of audio, 15 extra hours of music including entire Glastonbury gigs.

There’s even a Multi Angle option when you watch the film. Er, what? Well, the disk contains three different cuts of the movie running at the same time - each of which has 8 different soundtracks - this audio being the unedited 12 hours captured by the sound recordist working on the film in 1993. This means that it’s possible to cut your own version of the film in real time using the “angle” or “audio” button on your DVD remote as you watch the film. OR you can get involved with the perfectly titled “Insanely long edit” – which sees the three different video angle cuts and all eight audio tracks run consecutively so that nothing is repeated for 38 hours. That’s one and a half days.

While for many Glastonbury-goers, memories of happy days spent with friends checking out great music in the sun (or, mud) can be hard to hold on to, this package delivers a pretty comprehensive compendium of Glastonbury moments from the early 90s.

The DVD will be on release this week (from 30 July). Visit http://www.glastonburythemovie.co.uk for more info.

Blah blah blah

Airside falling back on the same lazy, unimaginative first year student-esque tripe?

Luckily they have editors in high places.

I’m so bored I scanned and vectorised my rectum.

Does the phrase ‘one trick pony’ spring to mind?

With that amount of bile I couldn’t imagine it would be a pretty sight. Unlike Airside’s work which always looks lush to me.

Keep it up folks. It works.

I don’t know how you can say it works… it’s very dull and doesn’t capture the spirit of Glastonbury. Plastic CD holders - not exactly innovative!

“…it’s down to the packaging of albums and DVDs to make the tangible music or film product a viable option to the consumer.” Very true.

“With this in mind the creators of the classic 90s film… set about creating a monster of a DVD package…” Not so true.

Tripe indeed! Welcome to graphic design circa 1998. What a stinker.

I just went and bought one at HMV. I recommend that you armchair critics do the same. Have it in your hands and feel the width before passing further meagrely digested censure.

Do us a favor — a spot varnish / additional pantones / special finishing can’t rescue the most facile of work.

But some of the best work in the world is facile. Airside invented this style. It’s been exhibited in some of the worlds top galleries. Millions love it. You lot are just jealous that you didn’t come up with it first.

fac·ile (făs’əl) pronunciation
adj.

1. Done or achieved with little effort or difficulty; easy. See synonyms at easy.
2. Working, acting, or speaking with effortless ease and fluency.
3. Archaic. Pleasingly mild, as in disposition or manner.

Give me the old vinyl three-fold triple album of the 1973 Glastonbury concert any day. Complete with plastic wrap and photocopied flyers and hand drawn booklet and blurry photos of tripped out kids lying in the mud. Now THAT was packaging that captured the event!
