East Village? East Finchley

Patrick 25/06/07, 19:55

N2 logo

This little “tribute” to Milton Glaser appeared in my London neighbourhood yesterday.

East Finchley may not quite match New York for the variety and quality of its attractions but a group of local shop owners and businesses have decided to try and boost a little local spirit. We can now buy canvas shopping bags and T-shirts in order to declare our love for our, let’s face it, fairly nondescript bit of North London, stuck between the distinctly more glamorous Highgate and Muswell Hill and previously notable mostly for the presence of two enormous cemetries.

That residents here could be expected to get a design in-joke like this is yet further evidence that Glaser’s original remains the gold standard in its field. Thousands of miles away from its birthplace, his NY logo is both remembered and revered by “regular” people. Years from now, will local neighbourhoods around the world be turning to the London 2012 logo when they need to engender a little community spirit? Hmmmm

Hmmmm! indeed,
it’s a fair point what you’re making here, however i wish people would at
least try and use some other ‘graphic’ language especially the ‘pros’
in recent years people have thrashed this concept to death, to the point
of tedium (sony - hagh-hum-cough-splirt!).

moving off the rant vibe,
i often wonder what glaser would have used to signify ‘hate’, does anyone
know if he’s ever (surely) been asked? what was his answer?

East Finchley is a legendary place and I am sure that the residents do appreciate the notion of us being linked to NYC. What a place to stay, I am considering buying a house in EF. It is like a quaint little town with too many people in it. Although it is very quiet at night which is good.

I’m not too sure whether East Finchley is :

“a fairly nondescript bit of North London, stuck between the distinctly more glamorous Highgate and Muswell Hill”

I think it’s a lovely part of North London with some wonderful cahracter - including some great bars and daytime pubs, a plethora of locally run restaurants as opposed to Wagamama’s, Nando’s etc, and some great people.

With it’s superior transport links, I chose to live in East Finchely as opposed to Muswell Hill (although MH is also a fantastic place) and don’t regret the decision to date.

Plus Phil Mitchell used to live here :)

Where can i get an “I Love N2″ sticker or t-shirt?
