Farrow’s latest for the Pet Shop Boys

Mark 21/09/07, 11:02

LP front

The artwork and packaging for Disco Four, a collection of remixes by the Pet Shop Boys (featuring songs by The Killers, David Bowie and Yoko Ono) has been designed and art directed by Farrow, employing the photographic talents of John Ross who is well-known for working with coloured lights and neon. The album cover features a number “4″ made with four fluorescent lighting units.

Farrow felt that as the album featured artists other than the Pet Shop Boys, a photograph of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe was inappropriate so, instead, the number “4″ from the title became the focus. Each of the inner sleeves to the album feature the same numeral, with an additional bulb switched off, counting down until all of the lights are out on side four. The colour scheme is deliberately neutral (white lights photographed on a white floor), the only hues coming from the word “DISCO” in the title.

As usual, Farrow set the example many others try to reach.
It’s nice, it would be good to see the studio push themselves a bit more though.

i find hard to understand why a design like this gets so much praise among the (most probably) british posters of this blog… i like other minimal stuff farrow did for other groups like orbital (the middle of nowhere) and deep dish (junk science), but this psb thing is just dull, underdeveloped design.
