Helga Steppan: Be long a part

Mark 12/07/07, 14:48

Blue

This evening, photographer Helga Steppan will be giving a talk about the work that forms her “Be long a part” exhibition, currently on show at Man&Eve gallery in London (7.30pm). As well as installation and moving image work, Steppan is also exhibiting these fantastic images of her personal belongings that she grouped by colour.

Her work is conceptually driven and often – as with See Through, the colours series – subject to pre-defined parameters that are documented through photography. Here, her possessions were arranged by colour and in accordance with classical compositional values.

In Belongings Apart, also on show at the gallery, Steppan has invited her friends to lend her something they own which is transparent. The objects will be presented as a large sculptural installation, shown together with photographs of the different locations where they previously belonged and a written piece by each owner.

“The White” is very neat.

very cool. love the simplicity of the idea. add in a cyan shot and youd have a nice printing spectrum. still, though, love the concept.

I appreciate further thoughts this triggers; out how color begins to be associated with objects, particular moods or activities in our lives;

-grey is digital and electronic equipment
-white delicate items
-black mostly protection and tools.
-pink is frilly girly happy stuff…

I likes these colors! I believe all of them can coexist in one place harmoniously.

Looks like something out of a design book or Martha Stewart. Cool.

I love the unique composition and the blend of monochromatic colors!

Great idea. I find a diferent perspertive in photos with the corresponding shadows appreciations. Black, miscellaneus and grey are almost over a plain persepctive with a harder representation of objects meanwhile red, blue white, pink and yellow has a perspective view with a softer look. Dunno if is a consecuence of evolution (refer to photo order) or an purpose focus related with colors, objects expoused.

In a different way I like the asociation between colour and mods

Anyway a simple idea full of possibilities. Congratulations.

love the black setup, most original idea you had!

It would be an incredibly thoughtful contribution to create a series of cultural comparisons … is there more black in Seattle, Melbourne or Abu Dhabi? Does pink transcend the world’s “girl cultures”? What is the role of “blue” in early 21st century habitat? etc etc etc

I love the way that in the sea of black textures your eye is immediately drawn to the ‘full moon’.

Definitely interesting how colour spectrums evoke a diversity of moods and feelings- this exploration could really spark something. Its almost harking back to the fantastic use of colours within fauvist and impressionist work.

The photos remind me inextricably of the famed Francis Bacon studio, carefully dislocated and reassembled in Dublin; and also, bizarely of the Holocaust vctims belongings at the Imperial.

Steppan has certainly exposed something of her inner being in exhibiting to the public, private, everyday, household posessions.

it was a good idea in 1995 when Portia Munson did it.

Beautiful, I think you must spent a lot of time to collect these pieces, very well done.
