Radar Festival Winners
The winners of the first Radar Festival have been announced, with new director James Healy walking away with the top prize, a place on the directors’ roster at Colonel Blimp.
The Festival, set up by freelance promotor and producer Caroline Bottomley, aims to find and promote new directing talent from across the globe. The competition had no age limit, and was open to people from any background, so long as entrants had not been previously paid as a professional music video director. Entrants were invited to choose one of 18 tracks to create a promo for and the festival attacted over 200 entries which were then whittled down to ten finalists by judges from Colonel Blimp, ResFest, Channel 4 and The Ideas Factory. The shortlist, which was played every afternoon last week in the cinema at London’s Apple Store, is impressive, covering themes from the comedic to the surreal.
Healy’s film, for Clark track Herr Barr (still shown above), contains a touch of Frankenstein and sees a flock of animated birds mutate into human hands to shape and manipulate an abstract fleshly form into a human being. Healy has previously worked in VFX on commercials, TV series and features and cites early computer animation as the main influence for the film.
Other prizes on the night were professional commissions with record labels Tummy Touch, Warp and Domino, which were won by Kim Albright, Ben Adam and Alex Garcia & Wayne Yip respectively. Garcia & Yip also won the Apple Popular Vote award, which was voted for by viewers at the Apple Store.
