Still from Radiohead, House of Cards video, directed by James Frost. Production company: Zoo Films. Technical director: Aaron Koblin. Post: The Syndicate

Zoo Films director James Frost has created a stunning new promo for Radiohead track House of Cards, which has just premiered on Google. See the video here.

In a technological first, the video was shot without the use of any cameras and only using lasers and scanners. The effect makes scenes of a party, a street, and Thom Yorke singing look very strange indeed. “We scanned the images using two different technologies,” explains Frost of the process involved in making the video. “For the stuff that features Thom, we used a system called Geometric Informatics System, which basically is a scanner that records points of data at 180º. For the wider environments we used a lidar system which is 64 lasers that revolve, recording 90º slices, so once you have collected all the data you basically stitch all the slices together to create a scene. We used this for all our exterior shots, where we drove very slowly collecting data.”

i dont know. i know the WHOLE point/idea is the techology, but once youve seen about 30secs of technology, clever technology doesnt sustain my interest much beyond… whoa! thom yorke breaking up a bit looking like one of the pin sculpture things from the 80s..whoa! a street er.. breaking a bit. .,. whoa! other people ummm umm breaking up a bit…whoa!

and its quite a boring song too.

obviously im utterly joyless and devoid of love.

I like the song, and totally agree with Daif (that he is utterly joyless and devoid of love)

Radiohead have tried a ton of good ideas out with “In Rainbows”, some of which cost them dearly (liek the free downloads)- which is prompting the whole music industry to ‘think out of the box’ a bit more.

It probably doesn’t look that great yet, but it is a good idea

not sure if this video is as far ‘out of the box’ as you think. ok, its a clever bit of technology, but beyond that.. did i miss an idea behind the use of the fancy software? i guess im thinking about that other radiohead video which is done in stop frame in some woods. that was about the processes used but also had ideas beyond that. it just seemed like they had this fancy gagetry and just stuck some people in a room, and panned down a street a bit.

that said its a music video and not worth arguing about.
