Record sleeves of the month

Gavin 18/12/06, 18:37

Here at CR towers, we get sent lots of lovely things – among them, promo CDs and actual releases arrive by post for our delectation. Below are the sleeves that we like the most from the last month or so.

Tiga 3 Weeks remixes sleeve shot by Wolfgang Tillmans
Tiga’s record releases to date have invariably featured a photo of the artist himself, usually looking rather dapper in a velvet jacket and sporting a cravat – or some other gentlemanly garb. And we at CR certainly can’t fault a man for smartening up his appearance, although Tiga’s last few sleeves haven’t really piqued our interest. So, it was with some considerable delight that we come across this, the sleeve for Tiga’s 3 Weeks remixes 12″ shot by Wolfgang Tillmans. We hope Tiga remains as well dressed and quaffured as ever.

Gwen Stefani album shot by Jill Greenberg
Artists who want to appear on their record sleeves (Tiga take note), would do well to check out the cover of Gwen Stefani’s latest album, The Sweet Escape. While we’re not sure exactly how one should “wind it up” (what is she on about?), the shots of Stefani taken for the album artwork by Jill Greenberg are fantastic. Here are a couple more of the shots:

Gruff Rhys Candylion sleeve
Released early in the new year on Rough Trade label, Candylion is Gruff Rhys‘ (he of Super Furry Animals fame) second solo album. There is no artwork credit on our promo CD of the album (front shown above) - though we are guessing that it’s the work of Pete Fowler (Fowler has collaborated many times with SFA and Rhys). If anyone can confirm or deny this cover is his work - please let us know!

Sebastian Ross Ross Ross EP sleeveSebastian badge
This sleeve for the Ross Ross Ross EP by SebastiAn on Ed Banger records is undeniably eye-catching. The artwork, by Ed Banger resident designer So_Me, makes for an equally noticable promo badge too.

Jarvis album sleeve by mitDR
Lastly, we thought we’d include Jarvis‘ eponymously titled solo album - even though it was released a month ago. We just really like it. The design is by The Designers Republic and the shot on the front cover (above) by Serge Leblon. The type on the back (below) suggests TDR have been enjoying the sleeve design work of Non Format.

The Jarvis type…

…and shameless self-promotion.
