Short & Sweet

The short film evening Short & Sweet, which has been held weekly in Brick Lane for over a year, has arrived in the West End of London.

The event, which showcases the best in shorts, music video and animation, will continue its weekly Monday evening screening at Cafe 1001 on Brick Lane, but is now also held at the AKA Bar near Holborn every Tuesday evening.

Julia Stephenson, the brains behind Short & Sweet, is keen to encourage ad and production company film enthusiasts to the night, which she hopes will be an opportunity for conversation as well as film-watching. “I want to create a community of film-loving people,” she says. “It’s important for people to remember why we all came into this industry. I don’t expect you to like everything I show, but I try my hardest to show people good work.”

Short & Sweet stands out from the typical short film events by not only focusing on new talent but also showing older, rarely seen films, as well as shorts and music videos by established directors. And with a weekly programme to fill, Stephenson is always on the look out for new work. “I’m lacking comedy at the moment,” she says. “Everybody’s dark, dark, dark.”

Short & Sweet is on held every Tuesday from 6pm at AKA, and continues its Monday night screening at Cafe 1001 from 7pm. There will also be an open air film night in Soho Square on August 23. More info is at www.shortandsweet.tv.
