Some of our favourite videos of 2006
Before embarking properly on the new year, it seems only right to pause and reflect a little upon some of the great (and one not so great) music videos of 2006. Since we started our blog in October we’ve been feeding you regular slices of promo brilliance but we thought that we’d take this opportunity to do a brief rundown of some of our faves from the whole year, in case you missed them first time round. There is nothing terribly scientific about this list, and we don’t have nearly enough room here to tell you all the ones that we liked, but here we go, in no particular order…
We begin with Tom Gauld and Dirty UK’s bleak but beautiful animated promo for Ed Harcourt’s Visit from the Dead Dog.
Hot Chip came top of the Guardian’s list of the Ultimate Albums of the Year (compiled by making a list of other people’s lists… keep awake at the back) and were perhaps helped along by this brilliant promo by Nima Nourizadeh for Over and Over.
OK Go’s video for Here It Goes Again stormed the internet, while making treadmills actually seem like they could be fun.
Motomichi Nakamura is behind this minimalist animation for The Knife’s We Share Our Mother’s Health.
Stop motion animation was everywhere in 2006 but rarely looked as lovely as in Kris Moyes‘ video for Heart Made of Sound by the Softlightes.
More fab animation by Monkmus for Mogwai’s Travel is Dangerous.
This may not be up there with Michel Gondry’s greatest but his promo for Beck’s Cellphone’s Dead was still a highlight of the year.
Ramon & Pedro directed this sweet vid for Readymade FC’s The Only One.
Dougal Wilson’s video for Jarvis Cocker’s new track Don’t Let Him Waste Your Time appeared right at the end of the year, but was one of the first videos to make us laugh out loud.
Finally, one duff video of the year… Tony Kaye’s celebtastic film for Johnny Cash made us wince, for reasons explained in full here. It seems we weren’t alone in this, as the readers of Antville also voted it their worst video of the year, but judge for yourself. Justice vs Simian ‘ We are Your Friends’
Any of the Gnarls Barkley videos, constantly inventive and humorous - my favourite perhaps ‘Smiley Faces’ if only for the Dennis Hopper introduction.
Same goes for The Zutons - ‘Valerie’ featuring the band escaping from prison was clever.
Weirdest video - Robbie Williams ‘ Lovelight’. Can’t work out if he’s had some work done or if it was manipulated to make him look thinner…..
