Sweetly surreal

TBWA\Chiat\Day is gaining a reputation for producing seriously strange, but seriously funny, ads for sweetie brands Starburst and Skittles. The latest from the agency is featured in the May issue of Creative Review (and can be viewed above on YouTube), and sees a bizarre singing stranger approach two guys in a bus station after hearing that they are partaking in the new flavour Starburst sweets, Berries & Cream.

Director Randy Krallman spoke to CR about the spot. “When I initially saw the script I thought it was odd and funny, but when I heard the creatives sing the song, the whole thing really took shape,” he says. “That second verse where it goes up an octave just killed me from the beginning.”

“There were endless discussions about the lad. Did some horrible experience traumatise him enough that he’s now blowing dudes in these bus station bathrooms, or does he just dress a little funny, loves Berries & Cream and just happened to be at a bus station? Still not sure where we ended up on that argument to be honest.” Quite.

The first, Trade, sees a young kid trade his Skittles for a singing rabbit, with disastrous results, while Beard features the most unusual job interview anyone at CR towers has ever witnessed… Watch them again below.
