The Mighty…errr…Puffs?

Gavin 11/03/08, 13:14

Spotted this ad on the telly-box last night. The Sugar Puffs Honey Monster is back and stars in a new ad (created by agency Bray Leino) - in which he is seen making up a whacky rhyme (about eating Sugar Puffs) with some actor who seems to be in every other TV ad at the moment…

However, fans of cult comedy show, The Mighty Boosh, will recognise immediately that the vocal moves being busted by HM and his annoyingly advert-involved friend is undeniably of the “crimping” variety – crimping, being the vocal speciality of Boosh characters Howard Moon and Vince Noir (created and played by Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding). And, as any self-respecting Boosh fan will know, this isn’t the first time Moon and Noir’s style has been cramped by a copy-cat crimping duo…

“No. This my friend is Jazz Funk. - The cerebral musicality of Jazz mixed with the visceral groove of funk. “

There’s taking inspiration and there’s just copying. I saw this Salca ad http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gq3F39h-xd8 (it’s pesto) and it’s so horribly copied from this Youtube work of genius http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzqumbhfxRo

Please try harder in future ad men.

The clips dan posted both remind me of what is surely the source of inspiration for the quality cut-up drums link…

That is truly painful. Student-centric advertising at its very worst.

Compare:

Youtube original material-

There’s also an overdubbed version from which the teletext ad has stolen lines from almost word for word.

This is really awful. I hope someone kicks up a fuss over this.

I agree with Dan Northcote-Smith.

That is just completely copied from the Boosh, and its such a bad copy at that.

I know advertising’s been ‘ripping off’ stuff for years and years, so nothing new there. But this, at the end of the day, is just a bit, er rubbish isn’t it? It’s just taking something that is genuinely good right out of its context and shoe-horning it into an ad, where it is meaningless and pointless. Lazy. Lazy. Lazy.
