Six Seconds from '69

This is a short film about the evolution and integration of a drum break recorded in 1969: The Amen Break. It was created as part of my work for my final year at art school.

I was interested in the ability for a sample to go public domain, and the impact of copyright and ownership on samples such as this. Copyright can be quite a negative thing, and hamper creativity- the lack of tight copyright controls has, in the case of the amen break, has aided the birth of sample based music.

The film progresses in soundtrack and visually- going from early songs which sample the break, through images of different playback devices, to the current trend of using itunes, youtube and blogs to listen to music.

The work is a series of "moving photographs"- static, very close in, shots of parts of cassette tapes, the grooves in vinyl and pixels on monitors.
