LIGHT TRAFFIC ONLY

This is the first in a series of homeware products designed by Gareth Wild, featuring the typography found on white village sign posts. Older signs are cast in steel, later versions rivet individual metal letters onto wooden posts. The signs are slowly disappearing – vandalised, buried in hedges, destroyed in car accidents and inevitably replaced with their modern equivalent.

It started as a local promotion idea but we started getting orders from further afield. It doesn't seem to matter that people don't know the villages - they just like the mad names and the type style. The first edition has nearly sold out and we're waiting for the next run. We've modifies the design, added some new names and changed the spec.... so the design will evolve with each production run.

The products are available to buy from http://www.59HighStreet.com - the gallery/shop for graphic designer Gareth Wild and illustrator Michelle Thompson.

As a former student of Gareth's, i'm not surprised that these items have been so popular. I've enjoyed keeping up with their work and site blog. However, few years ago i was lucky to recieve a copy of 'apropos everybody' - illustrating the process behind the studio's work. I'd commend it to any student or practitioner as a must have guide to exploring visual language. So well done and 'top marks' from your old student maria!
