Not many people realise this but the original 'cricket' character from the adventures of Pinocchio is actually killed by the puppet when he tries to give him advice only to come back as a ghost which then haunts Pinnochio giving him even mo...re advice.

So, imagine that rather than coming back to life, the cricket dwells in the after-life plotting revenge against the puppet that murdered him, and by harvesting the souls of other dead insects with revenge on their minds, manages to grow to an almost human form before which he uses to claw his way back to the land of the living to act out his vendetta against the wooden felon
