As children, we are all told stories of characters that form parts of traditional stories. Some of these are very well known across the land, and some are just kept to the local area. The stories from Cornwall are a mixed bunch. Only a couple have made it to a wider audience, yet others are remaining locked deep amongst the people who live there, keeping them private from all who trespass on their land. Others have taken on a new spirit, for example, the children’s tale of the ‘Mousehole Cat’, is actually the story of Tom Bawcott and his Christmas eve fishing trip in a terrible to feed the starving village.
These ideas of secret stories hidden in the landscape have had a major influence on this work. Having spent time living in Cornwall, and hearing some of them first-hand, the intrigue in them has grown more in wanting to share them with others.
Stories are there to expand the mind, to get the ideas generated, and to make you imagine the landscapes they are set in. This works from an early age. When our Parents and Grandparents tell us tales of ‘The Hungry Hungry Caterpillar’, right through to the recent ‘Harry Potter’ stories, our minds work overtime in imagining every single detail involved.
The idea for this work is to do the same, but by using single images instead of words. The old saying goes like this:
“Every picture tells a story, a picture is worth a thousand words”

What if a single image could give you an idea of the history contained in one place, as well as adding an air of mystery that makes you want to explore it further? Well that is the aim with this series, to tell the mysteries of Cornwall to a wider audience. To capture the viewers mind with the knowledge that there is a lot more to the scenes infront of them than meets the eye.
With the clever use of multiple exposures and layering, these wonderful yet artificial landscapes have been created. The viewer is invited to explore them with their own minds and fascinations. Can you see the tales of Cornwall unfolding infront of your eyes? Can you see the paths leading you off to the ocean surrounding the land, yet the same paths that are surrounded all along by the mystical beings?
The series aims to take you on this journey of exploration and adventure. See them as a stark contrast from the real word, a place to escape to. Use your own imagination as your eyes run wild looking into the details. Explore the photographs one by one, layer upon layer, feel yourself transported somewhere else. Remind yourself of those precious moments as infants, remember what it is like to explore these wonderful and imaginative landscapes without any preconceptions and stereotypes.
