Out of Newcastle-upon-Tyne-based production company J6 films comes this starkly graphic, entertaining animation for dance outfit Karoshi Bros by director Graham Smith.

"After listening to the track and with the freedom of an empty canvas, it was evident that this video needed a lot of energy and to fall into a racing theme. In my eyes the delorean is one of the coolest cars going and if I was going to make a racing video I had to have the coolest looking cars, supercharged! Besides the usual references to the car (you know that time machine film) I have not seen a delorean used in video or animation work since 1984 (but don’t quote me on that the internet knows more than me). Back to the video. I love to keep things down to the minimum where I can.

"Notice the surrounds and horizon, nothing but clean lines. For some reason I had visuals and sounds of Kraftwerk running through my head as the video started to take shape, this may have influenced me towards the clean and uncomplicated compositional structure that runs throughout. The freedom to move around in 3D was excellent, pulling and twisting scenes apart with exaggerated CU camera angles and warped perspective here and there, similar to the work of Julian Opie and Muñoz (controlled use of perspective and shape).

"The video went through two processes, 3D and 2D. The secondary stage was really where the energy and pace clicked, using lighting fx and visual toys to crank up the power.

"In the back of my mind I was always thinking this can’t be just another racing video. (you know chequered flag / stadium / crowds / winners etc etc).

“THERE WAS NO WAY WITH THIS TRACK AND THAT MUCH ENERGY THIS CAR WAS GOING TO STAY ON THE GROUND!” Director Graham Smith.

'Vive la Difference' was selected to be shown at the Glastonbury Village Screen. Films from across the UK were screened at the meeting point at the festival, one of the busiest places on the site. Glastonbury Festival was a complete sell out, attended by 350,000 people.
