Following a commission from Channel 4 to curate a week’s worth of content for its late-night, short-form arts strand; Random Acts, Christie HQ (headed by director Mike Christie) approached Irresistible Films for a series of top-line ideas to present back to the channel’s commissioners, of which Toy Soldiers was one; pitched and selected for broadcast.

On meeting with the channel, the idea was discussed and developed to ensure key elements relevant to the program were encapsulated; with a request for more coarse language and a further random ending being brought to the table.

Creative Director Georgia Oakley tells us, that the short film acted as ‘a humourous piece of light relief [whilst] highlighting the futility of war. The ‘attack’ on the soldiers by what is essentially nature, was the main concept used to suggest the irrelevance of the ‘enemy’ in such matters…this was very much a passion project for all involved.’

Overseen by Irresistible Producer Luke Plaister, Animation Collective; Bee Everywhere, along with Red Bull’s Canimation winner, Chris Butcher, executed the content, helping to bring the animation, complete with abstract explosions, to life. Voice-over accompaniments were generously offered up by the acting talents of Ollie Smith and Leo Wyndham, further elevating the story’s humourous elements.

Toy Soldiers epitomises Random Acts mantra focused entirely on specially-commissioned 3-minute films, selected for their bold and creative expressions of an artistic nature, enabling a diverse range of both established and emerging creative talent to supply imaginative content. With another in the pipeline, hopefully this will be the start of future Random Acts from both Irresistible Films and ChristieHQ.
