To mark it’s 10th anniversary, the UK’s largest music charity for young people, Youth Music, has cooked up a project called Destroy / Rankin – in which musicians photographed by Rankin have created new pieces of artwork by essentially ‘destroying’ one of the photographer’s iconic portraits…

Destroy / Rankin has taken two years to pull together and involves over 70 musicians and visual artists including Michael Stipe, UT, Jarvis Cocker, Ian Brown, Fred Deakin, Kylie Minogue, Debbie Harry, Douglas Gordon and also Damien Hirst. Hirst has painted an oil portrait of his late friend Joe Strummer based on Rankin’s 1999 photograph:

A book featuring all of the imagery (cover shown, top) plus five specially commissioned essays on the relationship between art and music by some of the Destroy artists and key cultural commentators will also be on sale via the website – here are a selection of spreads from the book which has been designed and art directed by Big Active:

The work will be on show at Phillips De Pury London, for free, between November 9 – 21. Collectors can bid online for the work from November 7, or attend the Open Auction on November 14 to bid for 25 key pieces. There is also a programme of music events running at Phillips De Pury in conjunction with the project – there will be live performances from the likes of Patrick Wolf, Micachu, Josh Wller, Little Boots, The Enemy and more… Full details at youthmusic.org.uk/rankin/home
