Human After All was set up by the founders of film magazine Little White Lies. The studio launched Delve in January last year and each week, compiles a newsletter featuring a series of articles about a single film. Films are chosen by a team of journalists and critics, made up of the Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw, Empire magazine’s Ian Freer, Radio Times’ Karen Krizanovich, Tim Robey from The Telegraph and Delve editor Jonathan Crocker, and range from James Bond blockbusters to indie dramas. For each edition, the studio commissions an illustrator or graphic artist to create an alternative poster for that film – writing about the process on the HAA blog, deputy creative director Victoria Talbot says: “We knew we had to delve deeper than an alternative poster rework or straight-up character portrait…. Our inspiration came from the rich, beautiful Polish and Czech movie posters that began emerging in the 1940s. These stunning pieces of art captured the essence of a film without resorting to floating heads or film stills.”
Artists – often without seeing the film in full – are asked to think about driving themes, visual cues and colour palettes before creating a single image which distills the essence of the movie, says Talbot. HAA provides a detailed creative brief and concept visual for each illustrator and posters will usually go through two or three revisions before being released.
“We keep the following points firmly in the front of our minds: Does the idea truly capture the film’s essence? Does the idea engage with the film’s bigger themes? Is the idea visually arresting? Would someone want to have it on their wall?” she explains.
Illustrators are discovered through illustration agencies, blogs and social media, and some have collaborated with HAA on previous projects. Others are commissioned after sending in their portfolio. “Artists regularly get in touch to introduce their work to us – and we do look at them,” says Talbot.
Prints are for sale on the Delve website and HAA runs regular giveaway competitions on social media. It’s a lovely selection of artwork and a mix of established names and exciting new talent.
