We’ve got a bit of everything for you in our latest Ads of the Week: Piers Morgan, tech wizardry, beautiful animation, lots of monkeys, and, um, some crying children…


First, the aforementioned Morgan does a fine job of sending himself up in this amusing new spot for Lotto by AMV BBDO. Creative directors: Alex Grieve, Adrian Rossi; Creatives: Tim Riley, Charlotte Adorjan, Michael Jones; Director: Jeff Low; Production company: Biscuit.


Over to Mother now, for the first of two spots from the London agency this week. This Ikea ad is the latest in the ‘Wonderful Everyday’ series, and features a group of monkeys mucking about in an Ikea kitchen in the rainforest. Director: Juan Cabral; Production company: MJZ; Post: MPC.

The second Mother piece this week forms part of a campaign for Ritz Crisp & Thin snacks. The campaign features a soundtrack of the song Puttin’ On The Ritz (see what they’ve done there?) performed by Gregory Porter, and alongside the conventional ad, here, the brand has released this charming animated lyric video to promote the song, which is available to download from iTunes. Tonight on Channel 4 an ad break will be devoted to a live ‘Twitter battle’, all with the aim of promoting UK electro-pop band Years & Years.

Viewers will be able to vote throughout the three-and-a-half minute break to switch between three completely different, never seen before performances of the band’s brand new single Shine, using different hashtags that correspond to the style of each separate music video. Tweets will be counted live during the ad break and tallied every 30 seconds at which point the music videos will switch seamlessly to the viewer’s most popular creative at the exact same place in the song. We close this week’s round up on a serious note, with a spot for charity Doctors of the World, which makes the point that sometimes making a child cry can be a good thing. Periscope: dipping in and out of people’s lives

While the immediacy of online interaction is familiar to those of us who use social media – and second nature to a generation brought up with platforms like Snapchat, FaceTime and YouNow – watching a live video feed via your phone screen is an intimacy that takes a bit of getting used to. Add in the fact that viewers can type comments directly into a Periscope stream, which the broadcaster can react to in near real time, and it becomes a uniquely connected experience. Using the app’s map feature, which shows every ‘scope being broadcast at that particular moment, users can scroll across the world and decide where they want to go. Aside from the location, a user name and a subject-line to each broadcast, viewers generally enter into a new live stream not really knowing what to expect.

Two new covers for Faber’s Book of Strange New Things

Canongate art director Rafaela Romaya has collaborated again with illustrator Yehrin Tong on the paperback edition of Michel Faber’s The Book of Strange New Things. The result is a pair of covers that echo the original hardback design, but more explicity depict the relationship at the heart of the novel
