Charity ads and spots with a festive flavour dominate this week’s round up of great new work, which kicks off with some Christmassy cuteness from McVitie’s biscuits…
This ad is a follow up to the brand’s previous Sweeet campaign, which introduced the idea of the biscuits as fluffy animals. Any ad as out-and-out cutesy as this will undoubtedly attract some haters, but with the earlier spots receiving views in the millions, there are enough sharers out there that will lap it up. Harvey Nichols swept the board at most of the major ad festivals of 2014 with last year’s Christmas campaign, Sorry I Spent It On Myself. This year’s work takes the theme of selfishness to new levels, with the store offering to produce cards for loved ones that highlight which gifts you would like. While funny, the accompanying film, above, doesn’t quite have the surprise value of last year’s ads, though is still a distinctive voice in a sea of smaltzy Christmas ads this year (leaving aside the Mulberry ad, which incidentally comes from the same agency as Harvey Nics). Our second charity ad this week reveals a less typical direction from Save The Children. Whereas many of their TV spots tug blatantly at the heartstrings, this film is more subtle, starring Gerald, a child from the Philippines whose home was destroyed by Typhoon Haiyan in 2013. Despite the hardship of his life, Gerald is shown constantly helping his family and sharing what he has: a great example at Christmastime. Agency: adam&eveDDB.
