AMV.BBDO: The Economist, Print ad campaign

“We have moved the campaign on from where it was last autumn

Though still rooted in the same colour palette we were less concerned about every­thing having to be out of a black page,” says amv.bbdo art director Paul Cohen of the second installment of new-look Economist ads. “The last set felt very graphic, this time I wanted to bring in a more tradit­ional ‘illustrative’ style to run alongside the more graphic executions. As a result I think the campaign feels broader and opens things up for the future.”

The illustrators used this time are Anthony Burrill for Perspective and Rubbish, Paul Davis for Oyster and Cloud-Cuckoo-land and Non-Format for Balance.

As Banksy’s forays into the world of the white cube have shown, the meeting of grafitti art and the formal art establishment can be an uneasy one. This is reiterated in the current exhibition at Tate Modern, titled simply Street Art, which sees six international “urban” artists create artworks for the façade of the iconic building. The talent of the artists – who include Faile, JR, Nunca, Os Gemeos, Sixeart and the much-admired Blu – cannot be faulted but the method of display feels lazy, with all the works displayed on one side of the museum (to maximise the view when crossing over the Millennium Bridge presumably) where they compete with one another for attention.

The New Face of Mencap

The UK’s leading charity for people with learning disabilities, Mencap, has just unveiled a new identity, created by Rare Corporate Design. The new logo for the organisation appears in a round speech bubble with an emphasis on the first two letters of the name, me. The rebrand also includes a new corporate typeface called Me that has been specially crafted by typography firm Fontsmith in consult­ation with members of Mencap to ensure the end product is of genuine benefit to an audience with learning disabilities…
