ANZ branch turns into baroque-inspired GAYNZ for Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras

Tomorrow is the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade, and as part of its sponsorship for the event, ANZ has transformed an entire bank branch on Oxford Street in the city into a baroque-inspired GAYNZ.

ANZ has been a principal sponsor of the Sydney Mardi Gras for ten years, and in recent times has been having fun with this, creating a series of ‘GAYTMs‘ in both 2014 and 2015, which saw regular cash machines flamboyantly decorated with rhinestones, glitter and the like.

This year the bank has gone even further to celebrate Mardi Gras, by decorating an entire branch with baroque-inspired murals, stained glass and marble. The branch – on Oxford Street, which is part of the Mardi Gras Parade route – has been transformed inside and out in the project, which is created by ad agency Whybin\TBWA Melbourne and The Glue Society artists James Dive and Pete Baker.


The decorated bank includes 16 hand-painted murals, a frescoed ceiling, pineapple stained glass, a drag queen carpet, and even a pair of full sized marble penguins in the foyer in dedication to Denmark’s most famous gay couple.


There is a risk, of course, that some might accuse ANZ of engaging in a bit of LGBTI stereotyping here. Previous years’ efforts have attracted some criticism for this, though by and large seem to have been taken in the light-hearted spirit with which they are intended. Plus as Mardi Gras and Pride parades around the world grow ever-more corporate, the bank’s response is surely more fun than just sticking a rainbow-coloured logo on a billboard.

And, with the branch fully operational during business hours, it must make for a more entertaining visit to the bank than normal. After all, the Oxford Street branch usually looks like this:
