Area_2: 100 Graphic Designers

The curatorial premise behind Phaidon’s second Area book remains as simple and as effective as the original: ask ten well-known graphic designers to pick ten studios they think have been doing the most creative work over the last five years

The result is 100 discerning recommendations of practitioners from all over world working in a range of different styles. It’s a generously spaced book with each designer given four pages to show their work, which sits alongside a critical essay by the particular selecting curator (who include James Goggin, Ellen Lupton, Jan Middendorp and Irma Boom). Designed by Julie Hasting, the designer behind the beautiful fashion book, Sample (that came complete with pleated pages), Area_2 runs to a hefty 450 pages and contains 1,500 images displayed over a gridless layout. It also widens its catch beyond just print media, as in Area, providing a pretty thorough overview of the graphic design scene today.
