Azienda Agricola Dargenio: Figlia packaging

Category: Packaging; Entered by: Superunion

Figlia is a limited-edition batch of olive oil from Azienda Agricola Dargenio, featuring bespoke hand-crafted, 500ml clay bottles.

The edition was inspired by what the company calls the ‘sensitive side of nature’, which relates to how the product is made – oil is harvested from Coratina cultivar olives grown in the Puglia region – and the arrival of the company’s first female CEO.

Azienda Agricola Dargenio was founded by Emanuele Dargenio, who began producing extra virgin olive oil under the Padre label (meaning father in Italian) more than 70 years ago.

One of Dargenio’s sons, Giuseppe, took over the reins of the company from his father, and 2019 saw the third generational handover – to Giuseppe’s daughter, Emanuela. To celebrate the change in leadership, Azienda Agricola Dargenio launched a limited-edition extra virgin olive oil, Figlia (meaning daughter in Italian). Each of the 300 bottles were individually hand thrown and designed to evoke a feminine form. Aside from a subtle stamp on the base, the bottles were purposefully left unadorned so they may be repurposed as beautiful vases.

Superunion created a series of illustrations that form the foundations of the visual language of the packaging. These were inspired by the bottle designs and make use of soft organic shapes to form delicate and minimal depictions of female faces.

Like the bottles, the illustrations aim to celebrate the uniqueness of all things natural and come in a multitude of variations set around the same style and colour palette.
