Choi Haeryung on using illustration to solve problems

Taking on mostly editorial commissions, the illustrator talks about honing in on the details and the freedom her practice offers her

Like many creatives, illustrator Choi Haeryung found working through her thoughts by drawing felt more comfortable than using words, and she enjoys the versatility it offers. “I used to feel stressed by problems where everything seemed to have a predetermined, ‘correct’ answer,” she tells CR.

“When I couldn’t solve a maths problem, for instance, it was labelled as ‘wrong’. However when it came to drawing even if I portrayed something slightly differently, it wouldn’t be considered incorrect. It was appealing that drawings, simply by being shown, could inspire viewers to have various interpretations.”
